Metallic Squeek/Squeal
Well, Jules (Flyin'Grape) got her new MINI today! Yay!
Unfortunately, after getting home, she noticed a wierd noise...
It is a metallic squeek/squeal that comes from somewhere in the vicinity of the passenger side front.
It does not happen while the car is idling, nor when the car is coasting.
It happens when the trans is in gear and the car is in motion.
It increases in frequency and speed with the speed of the car.
I'll be calling Rasmussen in the AM to get an appt.
Anyone have any ideas? Transmission?

I have a similar problem on our new Cooper S. We've narrowed it down to probably being a belt. I'm taking it in to Classic in Mentor tomorrow morning. I'll let you know what the result is. It started making the noise about two hours after we picked it up on Wednesday. It seems to surface when the vehicle warms up.

Got the same noise problem. They said it was the window, not seating correctly and causing a whistiling sound. But that wasnt it, cause i rolled down the window more and still got the same noise. Plan to take it in soon, keep you posted.
I posted an earlier thread for this problem:

many different ideas and solutions. I think the best sounding one was a loose seal somewhere in the firewall causing the whine...

I'm having the EXACT same issue. It was doing it on Saturday and Sunday...but yesterday it seemed to have stopped. I drove home from DC last night and to work this morning and it hasn't happened again. I was going to take her in to the dealership to have it looked at, but while there is no noise there isn't really anything to check out.

I heard a similar screeching noise coming home one day the first weekend of ownership. I was pulling into my road at about 5mph. Had the windows closed. Opened them, heard the noise and then proceeded towards my house. The noise stopped. It was hot, I had the AC on and the HK crankin.
Freaked me out enough that I got on NAM searching for and finding various threads regarding said noise.
Started the car the next day and haven't heard it since, with 3400 miles and counting.
Made me think I was having audio hallucinations.

Thanks for the replies...
I spent about 30 min.. last night trying to diagnose the problem..
It's not the brakes as we coasted down a hill close to our house for about 1/4 mile in neutral and no noise.
No noise sitting at idle or revving up to 3K RPM
No noise backing the car out of the garage this AM.
As soon as it is in gear and moving forward, the noise starts.
Depressing the clutch, the noise stops (same as coasting).
I'm pretty sure it's not a belt. It is definitely a metallic rotational noise associated with vehicle speed, not engine speed.
Been calling Rasmussen since 7:15am today and still haven't received a call back..
My theory is that it's either transmission, axle, or cv joint related.

I'm taking the car in as soon as I can get it there. Hopefully it's simple like a belt or what ever. I'm sitting here fretting over it while the Grape gets her clear bra put on. I got ahold of my MA and he put me right through to Ann who told me to bring it in.
Now... hopefully I don't need those %^&*^&* Road Assistance numbers on the way up. It takes about an hour to get there.
I'm going to play the hopeful thread and figure on returning to Salem with the problem fixed! Gotta pick the kids up by 5!
I hope everyone else who has this issue finds it an easy one to solve too! I will post the results as soon as I get them.

sounds the same
We were experiencing the same symptoms. We wouldn't hear the "whine/squeal" until the car was slightly warmed up, then it was really annoying.
It was at its worst between 30 and 50 MPH. The sound would go away completely when the clutch was depressed.
Took our into the dealer this morning, they just called a while ago and said it was the first time they heard/saw a belt do that. They had to replace the belt. Picking it up this afternoon.
Hope that was it. Hopefully yours is a simple fix as well.

I just have to say, that it sucked waiting for the car for 10 months but it was AWESOME to drive in at 2:30, have the problem diagnosed in less than 10 minutes, fixed in under an hour and leaving at 3:45. I had to get back to Salem (an hour or more in traffic) to pick up the kids by 5. I arrived at 4:50 Traffic did help as it was good for a change.
They put in a new radiator and belt. The grape now motors as it should... noiseless! Good thing I don't take NO for an answer (my MA tried to tell me it was probably just brake dust), I just kept explaining and got the service manager. Once we got her, it was all smooth sailing from there!
Good Job ANN!!!

that's cool you got it taken care of with out much pain.
As I mentioned in my previous post, we had the same problem yesterday. They put me on a new belt the same day.
The service dept. was awesome!
I told them I would be in a hurry when I came to pick it up. When we pulled in the parking lot with the loaner they gave us, the service manager ran out got in my MINI, pulled it up right next to the loaner, shook my hand and we were on our way. (total time 2 min)
Customer Service ROCKS!!

Well, I went to the dealer this morning and they confirmed that it was the pulley, but they needed to order it. I'm not exactly thrilled that they have to order it, but I guess I'm just happy that they are confident that this will fix the squeal. If they don't have it in in the next couple of days, I'll have to take our Acura on our trip this weekend. I don't want to listen to that squealing the whole trip, especially when the car is brand new.

My car has been noise free since they replaced the pulley. So I think it's safe to say it was the pulley on my car.
I would think that I would know if my car was fixed. and what they did to repair it.
Why would you want to debate something I posted over three months ago anyway?
