R50/53 Front bummper Plates ***WARNING HUGE PICS***
Front bummper Plates ***WARNING HUGE PICS***
OK I was bored the past 2 days and decided to throw somethign together.... 2 days later emerged a wonder prototype. This requires NO bumper punching or zip ties or anything "ghetto". I haven't driven around with it since I am still on my temp plates and can't put the real plates on yet. Anyway, I am really just seeing what the mood is for a device that people could use for a front plate hold without ruining the wonderful curves of our baby's (our MINI's for you newbies). This can be taken off in a matter of seconds and put on in the same manner.
So basiclly I am trying to get a feeling if people like it or not.....

I like it. I regret that I cannot remember the helpful fellow in the Bay Area whose license plate is mounted in similar fashion. His is on an armature that fits into the MINI's towing aperture.
I favor this look because it presents the license plate for what it is--an afterthought that the MINI designers forgot to integrate into the front end design (as opposed to the back where it is given a recess). By placing it off-center and beyond the car it looks like a display or identification--which is what it is.
Another reason it works for me is that the USA plates don't fit comfortably over the bumper area--they protrude top and bottom. The license plate obscures portions of the grill and compromises the front end composition. And it just seems unMINI to me that an owner would have to drill holes in the front in order to accommodate what is required by law and should have been accommodated by the factory.
I don't believe the license plate needs to be centered. The Cooper's exhaust is on one side only and that does not diminish its appeal. Similar to the Cooper's exhaust the license plate need not be thought of as integral to the bodywork of the car.
One problem that the Bay Area fellow (wish I could remember his name) pointed out is that the protruding plate is more vulnerable to damage by others' bumpers.
I now have my front plate on the dashboard (a horrid location) as I consider where it should go.
Thanks for the giant photos of your beautiful MINI.

I guess I can't bring myself to put holes in such a beautiful aerokit for a plate! It doesn't REAAALYY stick out far.. about .25in from the fartherst point on the bumper. Total length from the plate back is .... (checks in garage) 5in... which is about 1in into towhook...

Good Idea
I would have loved to use this option, but the idiots at MINI of Manhattan drilled two nice hole directly into my front bumper to mount the damn plate. Then they call and want to know why I did not give them all fives on the new owner survey...
I like it! I have heard they may be doing away with the front plate here in ohio to save money! Hope it is not just a rumor!
I alos really like you color matched fenders, do you have any more huge pics of the rest of the car?
