New Mini With Turbo

Last night I was reading an article on Go Mini magazine about the 07 Minis. The 07 MCS is going to have Citroen-Peugeot made turbo motor, instead of our Supercharged motor from Brazil. I am not so crazy about the turbos, it has to be fine tuned, because I like the low-end torque on the mini s. Turbos tend to be lazy up to a certain rpm.

what do you think?

I think you’re right. I had a car with turbo for 12 years and it never kicked in at the low end, but had some nice zoom once it did.

Hmmmm it really depends on the size of the turbo that they are going to put in.. the smaller the turbo, the lower in the RPM band that it will kick in, but it dies sooner in the top end..

I had 2 Miatas (92 and 99) that i had installed turbo's in. For both, I was using a small turbo where the spooling starts at about 2100 RPM.. I didn't really considered it a lag...

If the newer motors were to have a big turbo (which I doubt) you will have serious lag but then can achieve more power..

From an article on the MotoringFile:

Twin-scroll turbocharger

On the twin-scroll turbocharger the ducts of each set of two cylinders are separated from one another in the exhaust gas manifold and the turbocharger. This serves to build up a charge effect from just about 1,400 rpm, with torque being generated just as quickly as on a compressor engine.
I'd still rather have a supercharger

I'd still rather have both.

Twincharging rocks! At least it sounds like it does (I haven't gone there yet).

My wife loves Saabs don't ask me why she just does. Back in 94 just before GM bought Saab we bought a late model 93 and it had that famous "turbo-lag", still a rather quick car once you got past that point. Than in 2002 she bought another one and what a difference, I don't know what GM did but about 95% of that "turbo-lag" was completely gone. I suspect that by the year 2007 that lag will be completely eliminated, I wouldn't worry about that at all

It sounds great, but there is alot of complexity involved along with alot of plumbing and heat in a very confined space.

I love that supercharger whine, more so than the turbo "pop" on over pressure. Gonna be tough. Might have to keep the '03 and pony up for a new '07, to enjoy both sounds.

Depends on how it's tuned. That GTI you drove in Germany generates 207 ft/lbs by 1800 RPM.

It doesn't take that long to get to 1800

I had a 1.8T Jetta before my MCS, and the power delivery characteristics of the 2 engines is very similar (to me at least).

The VW engine had a torque peak around 1950rpm, or reached 80% of peak by that point, or something like that - point being it was tuned to deliver some low-end grunt. I found that from 3000+ it felt great, just like my MCS.

Based on my experience, if I had to choose between a small car with a turbo or a small car with a supercharger, I would choose based on something other than the type of forced induction. I'm sure tuners have a preference for one or the other, but as a stock driver it doesn't matter to me.
