R50/53 What has your MINI been mistaken for?
I've had some good case of mistaken ideantity with my MINI so far...mainly mistaken for a VW or an electric car, but the other day, someone pulled up next to me at a stoplight, rolled down his window and said:
Him: "Hey! What kind of car is that?"
Me: "It's a MINI Cooper."
Him: "Who makes it?"
Me: "BMW"
(believe me....that's the easiest answer to tell people who just don't get it!!)
Him: "Oh. I've seen a few of those...I thought it was an old Dodge."
Me: "No...it's not."
Ok...an OLD DODGE???!!!
What's the oddest case of mistaken identity you've heard?

Twice now people have mentioned the words "PT Cruiser" when they saw my car!! I personally can't think of a worse insult!!
Even Pontiac Aztec would be more of a compliment!! With or without the tent option!

Gee, I never thought about it before, but a tent option on a MINI?? It could find a whole new niche as an adventure lifestyle vehicle...for dwarfs
(come on...one of you Photoshoppers out there can work this up, I'm sure)
PT Cruiser. I've gotten that one a couple times. Man, I sure wish more people would mistake my MINI for an Aztek. That would rock!
Most of the time when people ask me what kind of car it is and I tell them what it is and they've never heard of it, they just look at me like I am crazy.
One woman thought it was a Mercedes.

Them..."Excuse me, is that one of them new electric cars?" as I'm filling it with gas. Guess it could have been a hybrid.
OR
Them..."Excuse me. What kind of car is that?"
Me..."It's a MINI Cooper."
Them..."Oh, who makes it?"
Me..."MINI. They're an English car company."
Them..."Oh, but who makes it?"
Me..."MINI! That's the name of the company."

There SHOULD be an electric (or hybrid) MINI...clearly there's already public interest in such a car, since the public already thinks such a car exists. I've had the "is it electric" comment several times.
Sooner or later BMW will have to come out with an alternative fuel/electric/hybrid vehicle. The MINI seems a perfect platform for a whole lot of reasons.

I went to an auto parts place yesterday to recycle oil, and this guy was in the parking lot messing around with an old BMW 6-series. His comment to me was "nice paint job - real nice paint job!" I realized what he meant after I came back out of the store and he said "Is that a new car? Oh... who makes it?" Etc etc etc. He apparently thought at first that it was a very nicely restored antique.

Stopped for directions at a hill billy market the other day while motoring about the backcountry of redneck Oregon. Guy there asks me if that's a Morris or Mini. Had to laugh, but was impressed that he even knew about a Morris. Ha.

At the DMV(!) while we're registering it, the guy asks "What type of vehicle?", "MINI Cooper", "What?", MINI Cooper", "Uh...Who makes it?", "BMW", "Oh," he says "it's a Volkswagen!"

If anything it could , and I use the word "could" very loosely, be mistaken for a Gremlin. I don't know who made this car but I saw it in Waynes World. We got that first class bit of American Humour in Australia but we missed out on the Gremlin..Damn..Damn...Damn But hey you made up for it with the Suburban and the PT Cruiser...Thanks Guys. PLEASE send us the Aztec.. I can't believe it a small SUV with a Tent, You guys are the innovators.
Most people just don't have a clue, even after you tell them what it is, but I found it interesting that in the February issue of Car & Driver they do a road test of the new Honda Element (trying to keep up with Pontiac Aztec) and the writer of the article said if Conan O'Brien morphed a new Hummer H2 and a MINI Cooper the result would be the Element. He later refers to it as "Hummer/MINI love child"
My insane brother who, as the 'neglected middle child,' was born to provoke the rest of us, suggested at Christmas dinner that I had purchased a 'Pacer look-a-like!' How RUDE!! Oh, well, he prefers infield seats at Daytona to F1 anywhere .. that says it all
