R50/53 What has your MINI been mistaken for?
>>If anything it could , and I use the word "could" very loosely, be mistaken for a Gremlin. I don't know who made this car but I saw it in Waynes World. We got that first class bit of American Humour in Australia but we missed out on the Gremlin..Damn..Damn...Damn But hey you made up for it with the Suburban and the PT Cruiser...Thanks Guys. PLEASE send us the Aztec.. I can't believe it a small SUV with a Tent, You guys are the innovators.
As the famous line in that famous Aussie classic says...."We're ideas men!"

OK,I got a new one last night,
I was returning my rental skis to the ski shop, and some guy walking in said "Oh.. A Citroen! .. you dont see too many of those around" I was kinda flabbergasted, and replied.." umm..er..uhh... actually its a MINI... its new.. and theres a lot more of them around now"
that was about all I could get out, and actually, I didnt really feel like getting in to the whole MINI History/explanation.

Last summer when I first saw one, I thought it might be a new stylized MG. Doh! It wasn't until after I got behind one that I figured out what it was.... and now I'm waiting for mine to arrive! Yippee!!
>>PT Cruiser. I've gotten that one a couple times. Man, I sure wish more people would mistake my MINI for an Aztek. That would rock!
>>
I would rather it was mistaken for an Azek. Last night at a toll booth, the guy says to me, "it looks like a smaller version of the PT Cruiser". That was the worst yet. But it looks like some of you have had similar experiences.

Curiously enough, the MINI does resemble a Citroen.

I'm surprised that someone who knew about European-only Citroens wouldn't recognize a MINI; must be a World Rallye fan.

Sometimes it's fun to be on the other side of the mistaken-car-identity exchange.
Anyone remember when padded vinyl tops were popular? Some were even made to look like convertible tops, ribs and all. Stupidest car design feature ever IMO.
When I would see someone getting out of a 4-door sedan with a padded top, I would say:
"Hey cool, a 4-door convertible; you don't see many of those."
He'd reply: "Uh, it's not a convertible. The top doesn't go down."
"Oh, I'm sorry," I'd say "so did you know that when you bought it?"

I agree, I could never understand why people would want their car to look like it was a convertible!

Reminds me of a time when I held the door open for a woman and she just blitzed right through. I said, "I beg your pardon?" She said, "I didn't say anything." My reply was, "Oh, I thought you said thankyou."

That is a part of the problem with society today. There is no "Just being nice". There has to be some kind of reward for kindness.
I can't wait to tell people what they want to hear. "Is that a smaller PT?". Yes, yes it is... Then there won't be that many on the road. More for us! Yes, it is an electric car. That is why I am pumping gas into it. Have a great day!

After sounding that out to myself, it seems like it could have been a Pittsburgher! Yeah, we say things funny.

I was on the phone today setting up the insurance coverage for my new DS/B MCS (at dealer, ready for trucking to me!!!). I gave the friendly customer service rep the VIN and she asked for confirmation, "Mini Cooper, right?" I said yes, and she asked what one was. I asked her if she had seen the latest Austin Powers movie and she said, "Oh, that car? I thought that was a custom thing just for the movie!"
The Scene:
At a traffic light waiting for green. Large, high rise pick up pulls up on my left and woman passenger leans out and down from her window .
She: What kind of car is that?
Me: A MINI Cooper.
She: A what?
Me: A MINI Cooper, the'r from England.
She: Did you buy it off the lot or did you put it together?
Me: I bought it off the lot.

Someone at the mall asked me if my MINI was a Fiat. Another person thought it was some kind of really old classic car that I had somehow fixed up myself, and then outside of my local supermarket someone thought my car was an electric. I won't even get started on trying to explain the name MINI and Cooper.
ROLF! Oh my flipping God. A PINTO???
I don't see how the car could be mistaken for any other car. It doesn't even remotely LOOK like any other car?
A Dodge?
A Pinto?
A PT Cruiser?
An Aztec?
Puhleeze!

Similar story to the Guy with the Z3... My wife and I were pulling into McDonald's next to an older red Porsche 911.. We got out of our Chili Red MCS and I spent a few seconds oggling the 911 when its owner appeared walking towrds us talking on his cell phone saying something about this great little red car in the parking lot next to his car! He went on to ask us 50 questions about our little MCS! I did comment that the headlights were reminiscent of each other...
It's surprising that casual passers-by correctly guess the MINI to be made by Chrysler.
What's really surprising though, is that the MINI owner's apparently don't even realize it?
Sure there's some BMW (everyone likes to focus on that), there's a smidge of Rover too, but the heart and soul of the MINI is pure Chrysler. So don't be too offended next time someone asks...

Your conversation should have been:
Him: "Hey! What kind of car is that?"
Me: "It's a MINI Cooper."
Him: "Who makes it?"
Me: "MINI"
BMW owns the company, but you bought you car at a MINI dealer not a BMW dealer. It is an important difference. I’m not trying to be a critic just helpful.

The only part of the car that has Chrysler associated with it is the engine. However, even this was developed jointly by both BMW and Chrysler and dubbed Tritec. The suspension, the chassis, the design and all other aspects were developed by either Rover or BMW (actually there's one part made by Ford, but I can't remember what it is). This hardly makes it a Chrysler IMO.

By "MINI dealer," you mean a BMW dealer that had the space and $ to dedicate a showroom to the MINI brand, right?
