Remote Key Entry Question

Hey NAM,

Still waiting on my Mini to show up at the port, but I have a quick question.

When I originally went to the dealer, he gave me a tour of one of the cars. His first action was to place the key in the door lock and turn it to the right, holding it there for a second and letting the windows and sunroof open up. Same thing went for closing, he held the key in the lock and the windows all closed up.

So my question is, is it possible to do this from the key but with a button? I guess I should really ask...is there a button the Mini key?! I guess I'm so used to it with my Mother's 325 key that I just assumed that all the keys to cars nowadays have a button.

Also, if it does have a button, what exactly are the abilities of the key, button and all? (Other than starting her up )

Thanks!
-Nick

When you unlock the doors from the key, if you continue to hold the button down it will open the sunroof and the windows. Unfortunatly you can't close them from the key.

With the remote buttons on the key you can open, but not close, the windows and sunroof. It will lock/unlock the doors and the boot.

You can open the windows and sun roof with the key button, but you can't close them. You have to close them with the key in the lock they way he showed you. The key has a "lock all" button ( the mini emblem in the middle), "unlock door" button, and an "unlock boot" buttton. There is no panic button. Hope this helped.

I'm bummed

I just picked up my 05 MCS from the dealer last night and he informed me that the ability to open your sunroof and windows with the key remote has stopped. He said MINI stopped programming the keys that way 2 months ago becuase it was malfunctioning too often.

I was bummed to hear this.
I was really looking forward to having this option. I have read about that option on this site and thought it was cool.
(although you can still close the windows and sunroof by inserting the key into the door and turning)

Does anybody else know anything about this? Does any that does use the remote opening option experience problems with it?

I can't roll my windows down with the key or the button, but I can roll them up by inserting the key. My MCS is an 04/05 build.

I was told the same thing and it does not work with the remote. The manual is not yet updated... bummer

I can see why they made this change, that function was going batty on lots of people's cars - people were not happy to come back to their car to find all the windows and sunroof open.

We noticed just how sensitive and prone to open on its own it was on our 05 and had it deprogrammed. I don't miss it, barely used that function on the BMW over the years either.

My '05 MCS is a 2/19/05 build and it came with the "Comfort opening" feature enabled. I can open my windows from the remote keyfob. No problems to report. I also have this feature enabled in my '02 MC CVT which originally didn't come with it from factory. My '04 MCs also had it enabled as well. To close them up, you have to do it from the driver's side door lock.

The 2005 MINI key should be identical to the key of your BMW 325i assuming that car is a fairly recent model.

I can see why MINI perhaps is no longer enabling "comfort opening" but I am sure it can be activated if the customer requests it to the dealer.

Should not be a big deal, IMO.

What a bummer! Comfort opening was one of the features I was really looking forward to having with my Mini. It is cool that you should still be able to do it by sticking the key in the door, but the remote part was even neater IMO. Oh well. I hope they can solve the problem and bring it back!

I picked up my car at the end of May and the dealer asked me if I wanted the remote windows down feature. If I'm not mistaken there are quite a few features your dealer can program with the remote including daytime running lights.

So is anyone sure Mini is getting rid of the remote comfort opening? Or is it just a few dealers that have decided not to do the programming anymore because people are having issues with it? I e-mailed MiniUSA about it, because I really want to know what the deal is.

I just asked my MA this question as I will be picking up my baby in about a weeks time now. He said that is was changed from the old system to a new system where you have to press unlock 3 times then hold it down, or something to that effect....

Good idea. I will try to call the MA I've been speaking to and ask him if he knows what Mini plans to do.

I took delivery on June 10th and I have comfort opening. It was the default option. As hot as it gets here I use it nearly daily.

I picked up my MINI on Thursday (6/30/05) and the remote open was active. I don't remember them asking about it in the list of options to be programmed.

I picked my MCS today and it was programmed by the dealer. I did'nt even ask, it just came that way. One press to open drivers door, second press to open the passenger door and boot, and press and hold a third time for the windows to go down.

From the way it sounds, it seems like only certain dealers have stopped programming this feature. I still haven't received anything back from MiniUSA yet, but I'll let you guys know what they say when I do.

Here is the response I got from Mini today:

"Thanks for writing MINI. Although the comfort opening feature is one of much debate at MINI, I can tell you that you should always be able to roll down the windows and open the sunroof by physically putting the key in the lock, turning, and holding it in that position as the windows go down.

Whether you will be able to do the same remotely is still a point of contention. We have no information regarding the 2006 model year MINI Cooper at this time, but as soon as we have informaiton available, it will be posted online at http://www.miniusa.com and given to our MINI dealers."

Sounds to me like they are planning to get rid of the remote comfort opening, but don't want to say it.

Thanks for the update. They really didn't say anything about the 2005 and my dealer hadn't heard about it not being offered anymore so they programmed it by default.

When I purchased my '05 MCS, my dealer (MINI Woodbridge) gave me the full "MINI car memory features - Customer customization form". About two pages of programmable options that they could set, so for me, there was nothing set by default, I got to pick it all.

I still have a copy of it lying around if anyone wants to see what you can have reprogrammed on an '05 (and presumably most earlier models) and was never given these options by their dealer.

There actually is a panic button, if your MINI is programmed to have it enabled (and you have a car alarm). Holding the lock button on the key fob for several seconds will kick it off.

I took delivery June 1, 2005, and the comfort opening feature was not enabled. I had it enabled a couple of weeks later and love it!

Mysterious window openings

I have a Jan '05 build MCS, and I have had the windows mysteriously open twice, once while I was trailering the car. So now I'm very careful about how I carry the key in my pocket, not knowing whether the button is being accidentally pressed.
