Real MINI Racing!

Here are pictures and movies from 2005 TAMIYA Championship series at Atlanta, GA. It was a blast!...too bad that there were only 2 qualifies and we had to end the race due to the bad weather.

MINI is the biggest class to race on that day!

Looks awesome.

How do the M03's do against the newer M03L's? Is there a big advantage to the longer chassis?

I have an M03 with the old classic body, and i have one of the M0(1?) chassis with the old Monte Carlo body. They were both so much fun to drive around. Unfortunately the Tamiya championship never came around to a place near me.

Yo! Rally!

The guy who took the winning was running M03 which is the shorter wheel base!! Both M03 and M03L are pretty close in term of speed, since the race only allowed stock motor. M03 does a bit better in the corner, but that's not a real advantage. The winner was the sopnsored driver, so what ever car he drive he has a big chance to win.

I have the M03 with the classic body. The light blue on the second picture at the left corner.

Aha...here is a real champ. Nice to meet you!

That white polka dot MINI belongs to Laura Serres, if I remember correctly. Yes graphite car was painted by Luck(shopufo).

I did 4th in GT1 last year here in Atlanta. This year I don't have TBIII anymore so I entered a MINI class. It wa raining and the track was wet ans slipply...and there were only 2 qualifies and the ended the race with the result base on 2 qualifies.

My regular race cars are HPI PRO4 and R40.

You got PM!

I'll be darned, I've been looking at puting something like that together. Anyone know where I can find a 1:10 scale MINI Cooper S body? All I've found is MINI and Mini Cooper bodies.

Neat.
What kind of bad weather? Rain, lightning? hail?

Here is a 73+ mph RC MINI
http://store.wonderhobby.com/73mphcenract.html

Nice paint jobs- I could paint my MINI like that too.
Funny how the real Race MINIs are pretty outrageous-

Avitor, that could be an issue. Look around for a Pro-line/Protoform they produced one that did not sell too well around 2-3 years ago. You might even contact them direct to see if availability is possible direct from them.

MPR get rid of those Hpi's get a 415I hear the new TB gas car is dialed also. Yes that is the sponsored side of me speaking........I'll bee seeing Fernando out in Cal over Memorial Day for Reedy.

I agree, an S would be sweet. Me, I'm pretty fond of the Rover Mini body Tamiya makes, as well. Any sign of a 1/18 Rover Mini? I have managed to find one that fits the micro RS-4, so I can migrate it to my (future) chassis of choice, the SC-18 from BRP.

Gotta admit, saw Tamiya's EB version of Timo Makinen's 1994 Cooper, and the bug bit all over again. Same thing happened a few months ago, now I'm driving a 2005 MINI. Go figger..:-)

Take care,
Matthew Z.

Matt- Tamiya is doing a Quick Drive version of the Monte again it will come as a ready to run package with radio, battery and built car. It should be a popular choice here. If there is any interest here I can arrange for the shop I race at to set up a group buy for people here or just arrange the sales contact there at the shop.

Hmmm..

Interesting offer. Have to admit though, I am mostly looking for a 1/18 Rover Cooper or MINI Cooper body for an SC-18. Familiar with the QD, that's where the XB (Expert Build) in my post comes from.

Thanks!

Cheers,
Matthew Z.

Ugh its been to many years since ive gotten out of racing R/C cars(1991). But its good to see some places still have it going strong. Back in the days of Joel Johnson and the Upstart Brain Kindwald (both of which i beat when ever they came down/up for the East coast Nationals.(stock class)) When i see people talking about RC's i look over my ancient collection of car/bikes and think if i really want to get back into it. I say to myself .. NAH! no place close by anymore. I have dropped by a few places on some road trips to see how things are going and found a few people are still using old Joke tricks (Buttermilk and Spam) to play around with newbies to the sport. Were never shown tuning tricks for Stock motors or how to pick a good one from a bad one just by looking at it. Oh heck there i go rambling again.

some of the cars/bikes i have are:
*** Tamahawk 1/10
Tamaya Bruiser 1/10
PB Mustang 1/12
PB mach 5 1/10
Bolink invader 1/10
Bolink Roundtracker 1/10 (won the 1985 indoor camps with)
Koysho MK1 bike 1/10
old Clodbuster 1/10
3 R/C 10's 6 gear tranny, 1st gen prototype MIP, Fast track Belt drive
CRC Cobra 1/10
a Dominator 1/10
Yokomo Dogfigher 1/10 4x4
If this list is bringing out any Flashbacks or other medical conditions .. i appoligize in advance.

oh matt thanks for the sig thing you have mine ends up being:

Mugami, if you want to clear the Bruiser out of the garage PM me. The sad or good part depending on how you look at it is Kinwald is still at the top of the game. Joel is around but not racing in big events hardly at all.

Thanks MPR thats just some of the collection i carry .. more of my prize collector pieces .. so sorry im not selling those. Also had some real oddball ones just so i could be different. Like that PD mach 5. which was just a Graphite square with open center using 10L front, Invader battery box and motor pod. No T plate or suspension to speak of. or a Koyosho Phaser Chain driven 4 wheel drive 1/12 scale. a predicessor to many of the TCS's of today. For the guy wanting my Bruiser.. you may if you havent all ready check around for Tamaya's Mountaineer. the Remake of the Bruiser might be eaiser to find. The one i have was a Guy's to drove it at the beach and messed up allowing the ocean to swallow it. Took me two years to track down original parts and restore it. 6 months later is when Tamaya brought out the new Mountaineer. I'm guessing i got a lot a people interested in the old truck and they brought it back. Either that or the Truck puller guys complained about getting parts too.

Mugami, I am familiar with the truck it is one of the ones that I wanted as a kid and never could saveup/con the parents into. I always am on the look out for one that is not Gold, unobtanium plated like the ones on E-bay. A few friends have them to pull out for an occaisional run up and down the track and then put back away.

If there are any mods you have been looking for just list the Bruiser.....

Occaisionally they pop up locally I have had a few friends run across them and actually tell the poeple how rare they are. In both cases the people knew the value and still sold the truck for around $300. Still wishing I could find that deal. A freind in PDX had 3 trucks given to him for free, Boss at the time said here you go you screw around with these RC cars.......

The reason i keep mine is i use to Own a 1980 toyota 4x4 in the same blue the guy is selling.. The bruiser was the it twin. I drove the yota for over 500000 miles before selling it to a guy in NY. Now back to topic.. i wish the interest was still around here for the RC racing. it gave way to Playstations and XboXes. Would like to know if you guys still know how to do Can Crushing, Heat tweak, Bushing shaving, Hood alignment (still have patent pending for the tool) and Magnetic adj. for Stock motors. Yes they all can be done without opening the can . Is it still 28-27 turn for stock or has that changed. Also just for interest sake. back when i got out of it.. the best off the shelf Stock motor could turn around 23,000 rpm. Then tweaked for long haul running to 30-32k. and for Major racing to 38-45k (only had 1 motor go to 45k. most 39-41k) as tested on a schwine dyno. which was before the Turbo 30 and other dyno's came out. Sorry for the questions but it pains me to see how much stuff is forgotten or not taught to new and upcoming drivers / Mechanics.

Well on the motor front Stock is still good ol fixed timing 27x1 with 24d timing. Bushing shaving is around but not welcome, Can crushing is alive and well but noone wants to admit it, Hood alignment is a big part at a National race, Adjusting timing thru the mags goes on but the armatures are also skewed so it really is not much of an advantage as they are adjusting the timing in the stack.
As for RPM's not sure what they are really pulling as I run Mod and Johnson silvercan spec classes. Magnets are quite a bit more saturated than the old cans and torque is big although a few mfg's have gone the rpm route. The Stockers of today are really like the old 13-15t motors.
The biggest change is we run hugely inefficient motors as voltage is now 1.19-1.21 avg discharge for a "team" pack. Battery capacity is now 3300 legal with 3700mah coming for 06 prolly.
Oh and Stock is now a rebuildable motor instead of pulling one side of the hoods and cutting the comm.
Chassis tech is huge I run for Tamiya and as a Mfg we have won the last 2 World Champs in 02 and 04.
Here is the latest chassis that I currently run.
http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/ite...oduct-id=49349

Here is the 02 champ chassis.
http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/ite...oduct-id=49219

The silvercan classes are the lost art anymore. The track I run at spent alot of time figuring out what made the silvercans fast without the crush etc. Sent that info to Tamiya Worlds in 10 different cars over the years. Myself I won the MINI class in 02 and placed 6th at Worlds. As a Mfg Tamiya is first class and the Worlds trip is second to none, even tried to buy coffee in Tokyo and they would have none of it, they insisted they pay.

Sorry for the ramble
Dan
