Please forgive my ignorance

I see many posts advising people to replace their cracked windshields with PPG glass (instead of OEM). Is PPG a brand name? If so, can you get it anywhere or do you have to go to a PPG supplier? If it's not a brand name, what does it mean? Sorry to be so dim.

PPG makes glass. Here is a store finder.
http://www.ppgautoglass.com/main/locations.htm

Any glass shop should be able to get it for you.

I just messaged YuccaPatrol the link to this thread. He has a PPG windshield. I'm sure he'll post something helpful.

Just call your local independent auto glass shop and tell them you want the PPG brand glass. They will know what you mean.

Best glass available for the MINI and about 1/3 the price of the genuine MINI garbage.

PPG used to be known as Pittsburgh Plate Glass.

Back when I was active in aviation (1960-1980) PPG was the preferred supplier of windscreen glass for jet aircraft.

Hey, can I ask an easy question, too? I'll probably be replacing my windshield with the PPG glass in the near future. What happens with your windshield registration sticker? Do I have to request a new one from the Motor Vehicle people? I don't even know if every state uses windshield stickers, but I'm hoping someone will know...

Pittsburg Paint and Glass

You yankees should be familar w/ it. Us damn yankees miss seeing and hearing about it (of course only when our families up north aren't complaining about the latest ice storm while we are trying to eat Hooter's wings on the river at the landing in December).

A good glass installer will be able to transfer the stickers from the old windshield to the new one...

I have DHS decals on both of my cars, these decals are designed to crack and splinter and do all kinds of weird things if you don't use the utmost of care in removing them. When the windshield was replaced on the Subaru the installer transferred the DHS decal perfectly, you can't tell it was re-stuck on another windshield... The state inspection sticker didn't behave nearly as well... But it's there...

I live in NJ and we have Motor Vehicle stickers on our windshields. When I had to have my windshield replaced, they just removed it and put it on the new windshield.

Has anyone with rain sensing wipers replaced their windshield with a non-OEM? If it's possible, how would that work? Do you have to buy a new sensor, or is it possible to move to old one to a new windsheild?

Thanks for the info! Wow, sounds like these guys could make a pretty good living in Boston with their skills and some glass cutting tools. Some of the neighborhood parking permits (which go on rear windows) are known to fetch amazing prices on the black market. They're supposed to be impossible to transer, but I wonder...

Single edge razer, a little trial and error, and then an empty CD case to hold onto the sticker. voila! (dont ask)

PPG is a brand name. However, the PPG glass for the MINI is a crap shoot along with the rest of them. Some have have great experience with them in a MINI. The PPG I had in my car only lasted a couple months before needing to be replaced. Usually a windshield will last up to 10 months in my car. PPG pitted and chipped just as easily as everything else I've had in the car. I'm on my fifth windshield now.

Do you get a lot of blowing sand and grit out there that causes this?

I'm sure other areas have the same basic problem. Construction - gravel trucks, dirt haulers, etc. Blend in our AZ dirt or gravel shoulders and the result are roads that make life dangerous for windscreens.

We took a couple good sized hits on our way up to AMVIV.

Full glass coverage is our answer!

My understanding is that it's some type of cartridge that's clipped on to the windshield. So, it would be removed from the old and attached to the new.
