NEED ADVICE ON PLATE

For the past months I have had personalized plates on order with the California DMV [about four months now.]

Because of the budget battle, the DMV has slowed down too. Just yesterday I got the FIRST of the plate notifications from DMV [I have 30 days to show up at DMV, surrender my old plates and get the ordered set.]

It's unclear if I can keep the plates on spec, without putting them on a car. DMV site says I can keep them and simply pay a yearly fee [lower fee if not on a car], but the "plate available for pickup" notice says that "Vehicle Code Section 5109 requires these plates to be assigned to a vehicle."

If I have to assign them to cars, I figured I would simply get all four plates ordered and put them on friends and relative's cars, so that I can keep them.

So here is my question: which of the below would you put on MY MINI, a red 2006. I figure I'll go with the one that gets the most votes.

The "MINI SF" stands for "San Francisco," by the way. I dunno if anywhere but here in the Bay Area anyone would get that. I think MINI of San Francisco [BMW] should pay me a million bucks for it since their website is MINISF.com Maybe I should pull up to the dealership and see if they get all worked up over it and make me that million "we gotta have it" dollar offer. I wish.

I just ordered my plates this past weekend. Based on Mini's marketing campaign of Zig for the coupe, Zag for the cab, and Zug for the clubman, I have a coupe. Therefore, I picked "ZIGGIN" I do have an R53, but whatever....the concept still applies. I was thinking of something like ZIGZAGN as well, but I liked ZIGGIN better.

I'll take pics when I get the plates!

ALMOST got the coolest NJ vanity plate...

So in NJ if you sign up with the DMV for a user id you can order vanity plates on the internet. Previously you had to send in your 3 choices and wait months.

With the new internet method you can check if a plate is available and order it immediately. Well, the plate "MINI" is, of course, taken BUT "M1NI" isn't. For the font they use on the license plates the "1" looks very much like the "I" so "M1NI" looks almost like "MINI".

Last night i order the plate even before i get my car because i figure someone is gonna take this within the next few weeks and i'm willing to register it on my current car and then pay $6.00 to transfer it to the MINI.

I get my first level confirmation email and I'm all excited. This morning i get my second email, this one denying my choice because because "Plate requested is reserved for another category and cannot be issued." Basically because it has the number 1 and 3 letters in it. They reserve the low numbers for VIPs.

So it's back to the drawing board...

i know it's only a license plate and in the overall scheme of things, not important...

Just happy to be getting a MINI!

Steve

That's kinda dumb - VIPs?? But ah well, I'm sure you can get more creative than that!

yeah x uh oh x i must agree it isn't creative but for some reason i just thought it would be cool - may have to do with my advancing age

i'm currently reading this entire thread for ideas.

I don't want anything too cutesy - i'm a 62 year old gray haired man

i don't want anything that nobody can figure out (like "RDWRRW" from Frasier's dad Martin's RV (Road Warrior)). I may have misspelled that... actually i considered that one...

the quest continues while i kill time waiting for my MINI to arrive.

I didn't mean to put your creativity down...I just meant that NOW you have an opportunity to be MORE creative! If your vehicle tells you it's name soon enough, you can always get that as a plate...

My plates (MINI and truck) play off of each other.... MINI has "x UHOH x" and the truck (or MINI support vehicle!) has "TRUUBLE" heh heh heh ...cracks me up. It's also appropriate, because every time the husband travels with me, he always ends up saying, UHOH, WATCHOUT!!! And grabs the ohs#$ handle for dear life....

no offense taken x uh oh x...

i have a Rabbit which my wife will drive once the MINI arrives - i thought about getting REDUX as the Rabbit's vanity plate. There is an old novel Rabbit Redux (Redux means revisited and since this was my second Rabbit, having owned one in '86, i thought that was pretty cool. Then i found out that Redux was a drug that was pulled from the market for some severe side effects so i decided REDUX wasn't a good idea.

anyway, back to the drawing board on the MINI's plate.

btw - my favorite vanity plate, already taken in NJ is "WAWAZAT"

Maybe you want to go with something vintage, from The Lone Ranger's days, and since you will have a silver MINI.

HIYOSVR or HIYOSIL [or whatever works for you].

For... "Hi Yo Silver." You can pretend you are Clayton Moore every time you ride your MINI.

What number is the 09 JCW? R56?

What about "Rover56" that has a nice ring to it. I bought Rover52 here in California.

Or if not taken:

JCWorks

Or:

JCWFlyr

Or:

NJFLYER

NJFLIER

NJROCKT

JCWKART

lol michael sf - i grew up with The Lone Ranger and Tonto - what if i were to get a white hat and black mask...

i definitely want to get a plate that people can figure out - when i retired i started making signs full time which has morphed into web design - anyway i got the vanity plate SYNDSYN (sign design), being really proud of myself because of the way the letters were balanced) NOBODY can figure it out. :( ... and for some silly reason it bugs me - guess i wasn't as clever as i thought i was.

Yes, and you also want a name that people will enjoy [and maybe even say "how clever."]

See my post a few earlier where I mentioned plates I bought. Most people on mine have said to go with "REDGNAT." I think part of the reason is that because they can figure it out, it's cute for the MINI and it pertains to my car, a small red car about the size of a gnat. The "Rover52" and "MINI SF" have not received any votes. No creativity, I guess.

Second vote was for the GNATSTR since here in Silicon Valley people can relate to Napster and they think it's cool to play on the word with "GNATSTR."

By the way, if you see someone's plate on NAM that you like, if it's available in your state, go for it. Far as I know, no one has dibs nationally on any name they use on a plate. It can be your secret anyway.

Michael SF,
... definitely what you said about "how clever"...

i had "BXTR SR" on my Boxster (my initials are SR, plus SR for senior) - but somehow i never really like it (the plate not the car)

"MINI SR" is available in NJ but it doesn't do it for me - maybe a leftover taste from BXTR SR.

My wife thought of MIGHTY, which i really like but it's not available.

Some others on my list are (max 7 chars in NJ, only letters and numbers):
JCWCOOP
MY JCW
MINIJCW (JCWMINI is taken)
ONRAILS

Go with MYTEE (golfer too?) MINIMYT (may be misconstrued) MYTMINI (Sounds pretty cool)

I still give credit to my wife for mine which is taking forever to get here, full story above about the trucks I have owned, but "RIPSUV" gotta love it in SoCal where everything is supersized.

How about RETYRED (close much color reference?)

Of the above.....ONRAILS is my favorite.

Good Luck! and Happy Motoring!

I really like the Lone Ranger reference! (Although, wasn't it "Heigh Ho Silver?") HIOSLVR maybe...

I thought I had a list of the plates from this thread that caught my eye, but I can't find it....

I think SYNDSYN was pretty cool, too! Don't discount it just because SOME people are dumb enough not to figure it out. I get that all the time -- "Uh, whut dus x UHOH x mean?" My husband's plate is an Ohio plate with: "97BUKI" (he's an OSU alum) and he gets questions all the time too...

ya' know UH OH, i thought SYNDSYN was cool too but began to doubt my judgment - thanks for the positive reply

ok - i submitted a new choice to the NJ DMV - should hear in 1-3 days - not going to post my choice until it's confirmed at the risk of jinxing myself...
