R50/53 mini hauler: trailer or dolly?
mini hauler: trailer or dolly?
I am moving from Los Angeles to Minneapolis.(job transfer). I went to u-hauls website and they said their trailer and dolly are not approved for hauling a Mini. I sure some one has used one of these and I would like to hear which works best.
Thanks

Tow Dolly
Here is my previous reply to a similar question
Hey Mike,
I actually towed my MCS cross country from San Diego, California to Washington D.C. and back. I used an aftermarket dolly that I bought used for $500 bucks. Due to the distance I travelled a Uhaul dolly would have cost me about $250 going and $330 coming back.
I was told that a U-haul dolly won't work due to the vehicle clearance and width between the wheels. I did make the measurements and believe that some dollys they have would work, but depending on the U-Haul dealer they did not want to rent to me because of the MCS. They also claimed it would scrape the ground if I did try.
I decided to buy a used dolly instead for $500. I sold the dolly for $600 a couple of months ago.
The only fitment issue I had loading the MCS was that the "airdam" underneath the car rubbed going over a metal brace on the dolly. It sounded bad but did not scratch or break anything, the airdam just rubbed.
I have 17's on my MCS, I had to make sure and secure and tighten the tie-down/rachett straps at every gas stop and break stop because the larger tires/and turns would loosen them up.
I bought new chain from Homedepot and used that as extra security to hold the MCS on the dolly. Wrapped it around the suspension and used carabineers to secure.
My 2001 Chevy Tahoe 4x4 towed the car like a charm, for the most part I did not feel the car until the return trip going over the Rockies, and even there it was smooth, just had to pay attention to the hills and grades.

We towed ours from VA to CA on a U-Haul dolly when we moved a year ago. U-Haul WAS reluctant to rent it to us but they did it anyway. We did park it on a slight incline to make getting the MINI up on it, a bit easier. No problemo.

Speaking for myself, no problems whatsoever. Since the front tires sit so high up on the tow dolly the only thing that might have gotten hit was the undercarriage. Also I have long mudflaps on the Tahoe. Nothing I would really worry about.
