Purchasing a high mileage r53

Title says it all. I'm familiar with r56s having owned two of them. About to nab an r53 with 175k miles. Ran strong and shifted well. Needs a decent amount of cosmetic repairs but nothing major.

Biggest thing is a broken parking brake cable which I can do. Mileage is a slight concern but it runs strong. Look forward to chatting more about the car with everyone and maybe asking a few questions about some of the things it will need!

Congrats! Post up some pictures. My '06 R52s has 215k and is running well. Well, it was before I put it away for the winter anyway. Hopefully it will start up and run OK when I get it back out next month.

The usual culprits,

SC service
Crank pulley
Belts
Oil and filter (first thing I usually do anyway)
Fuel filter
Check brake fluid
check coolant

Ended up passing for now. Found a decent oil leak and wanted to think about it. Guy took it to his friend to fix it. He said the oil cooler line was leaking. He's going to let me know when it's fixed and we will go from there.

There is no oil line running to the oil cooler -- the cooler is integrated into the oil filter housing. Maybe he meant the oil cooler is leaking. The seals are a common source of leaks. They are relatively easy to replace.

I didn't think so but he doesn't speak very good English so I figured he means the filter housing. It seemed like a lot of oil though. The own was covered so it must have been that way for a while or it's multiple things.

More culprits in addition to ones listed above:
1) plastic oil drain plunger disintegrates (it is in the oil filter housing), causing low oil pressure with all kind of the consequences.
2) timing chain stretch causing all kind of sounds, needs to be replaced along with the sprockets and tensioner.
3) electric power steering pump wears out and fails, along with the power steering cooling fan
4) if you check compression numbers and they are not consistent - valves most likely at fault
5) hydro engine mount (which is on the passenger side of the engine bay) leaks out the oil causing a lot of vibration
6) fuel filter is due to be replaced; if the fuel pump is original - time to replace it too
7) look at the door seals under the rubber gasket (esp, at the floor), those are prone to rust.
8) PCV valve (which is mounted on the valve cover) most likely needs to be replaced too.

Good list! The only one that makes me nervous is the timing.but there were no rattling noises and the engine felt pretty strong/plenty of pick up. The rest I imagine I'll be working on over time as they don't seem to be issues at then moment. Rust is minimal. I saw one little bubble on the rear but it was small. Im going to make a spreadsheet to list all these out with parts and prices and work down the list.

My only issue at the moment is the oil leak and where they guy said it's coming from. He swears it's from a hose by the oil cooler but the above post said there shouldn't be any ther holding oil. Might ask for the receipt from the shop on that one.

Consider replacing all rubber gaskets since they will have turned rock hard by now. OIl pan gasket, valve cover, oil filter housing. Only hoses near the oil filter housing are coolant hoses. Oil pressure sender could be leaking as well on the filter housing but be extremely careful changing it since the housing can crack easily (ask me how I know!) and it's a $500 replacement.

Actually went with a different one. Found an 04 mcd with 155k and one owner. Pretty clean but had some very minor cosmetic issues.

Nothing crazy right away. The ac needs to be fixed. Compressor spins but the slair only gets a little cool. Headliner is sagging. I'll probably go over seals and gaskets as suggested by others.

I'm not sure if I want to do crazy mods due to mileage on the motor. Maybe just a cai, exhaust and some headers? Open to suggestions.
