R50/53 Weird Xenon thing
Weird Xenon thing
On the way home and I get into the dark on the highway I thought my highbeams were on,look at the dash no light on,turn them on and they come on,and work fine.Turn them off and I'm seeing down the road way more than normal. So I check no one is behind me and slow hard, lights lift, get on the throttle hard the lights dip.So I pull over to make sure the bonnet is down all the way,I was at the dealer today, another thread, bonnet is down and latched.Turn the lights off, wait a moment, turn them on and they do the start up lift thing.Get going again and I no longer see a hard cut off on the road in front of me,it's now way down the road. Now I'm worried I'm blinding on coming traffic, but no one flashes me,and lots of traffic is coming at me.
Anyone else have this happen?I do like it though, hope they don't decide to go back the way they were.

I think there are some sensors in the suspension that relay information back to the leveling mechanism. When I'm on a dark road, I can see this happen: Floor it, and the beams rise up momentarily as the car sits on its haunches, but then they quickly come back down to their original level. Let off the gas and the reverse happens: the beams dip for a moment as the car levels out and then they come back to level again. I haven't tried this under hard braking, but I'll bet the reverse happens.
I've also noticed that it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the grade of the road. Go up a hill and the lights point into the sky - they don't come down at all as far as I can tell. So there seems to be no actual input as to where "level" is vis-a-vis gravity, but just "level" in the sense of how the suspension is weighted.
I suspect that what happens when you first turn them on is they poll the sensors - do you have four people in the car or something heavy in the boot? - and then adjust for "level" based on that.
I wonder what would happen if you were under serious acceleration (or heavy braking) when you first switched them on? Would their "equilibrium point" be screwed up for the rest of the drive?

I was leaving work when I turned them on the first time after the car was at the dealer.Everything is normal, they lift at start-up,self adjust when I get hard into the throttle or brakes. The lights are just adjusted higher, and I did not ask for this, nor was I told by the tech that he adjusted them. But it sure is alot better now,but I will ask the tech when I go back next week for another issue.I wonder if the sensor was bumped or moved if this would do it?
