R53 Engine knocking

Hello,

I am the proud me owner of a 2005 MCS with just over 60,000 miles on it. I have had it for about a week and I just noticed a noise coming from the engine. It's a fairly faint tapping/knocking noise that seems to increase at acceleration. The weird thing is. I don't notice it as much on cold starts, but parking after driving it is very noticeable. Looking at the engine from the front bumper the sound is much more noticeable on the right side of the engine. By the airbox. Thanks for any help you may have.

The video is private, so it won't play, but that probably wouldn't help anyway. Start by checking your oil level and freshness. Is it time for an oil change?

Sorry about that. It is public now. I am giving it an oil change today, would be great if that was the issue. The level looks OK though.

I changed the oil and the knocking did not go away. Still getting the same sound. I rove it some more and the sound is now pretty consistent and will happen at startup. With the windows rolled up you can hear it from in the cabin pretty clearly at idle.

I'd take the belt off and see if the noise goes away.

I'd also start looking at the dampener to make sure that it's not shot.

Forgive me for the dumb questions. Are you talking about the belt that drives the SC? Does that not also drive the alternator? And what exactly is the dmpener and how do I tell if it is good or not? Thanks.

I had a few mechanically inclined friends look at it and they seem to think its an exhaust leak. Would that make sense?
