Trust but Verify ; Transmission queries

After plenty of time researching i've decided since my W10 feels relatively strong I will just swap transmissions now for getrag and slowly prep for a K swap in a few years.

The 6speed Getrag has gone up in cost ($1195 from $695) so its no longer a no brainer. My questions are;

Would I need new axles (or other auxiliary parts) on a 5speed swap? Or is it drop and go?
Is there an LSD in the 5speed Getrag?
Can I swap in a Getrag from a N series engine or wont match up?

I have no idea.

Nope.

I've never seen anyone swap one. Pretty sure the bell housings are different, at minimum.

Yeah I suspected it could be different bell housing but figured I'd verify to see what my range in years of donors is.

You will need new axles and at the time (2012-ish) and there was no known LSD for the Getrag5. I looked into this before I sold my R50. The cost to put it in the Getrag5 was the same as the Getrag6 but it was half as much to just rebuild my Midlands/Rover unit. I was dumb and rebuilt the Midlands. Don't be me and just do the 6speed swap.

Doing the 6speed, the cost is higher but probably not much more than the Getrag5 swap as the parts list is, if memory serves me, the same for both jobs.

I also would think that the Getrag5 from the N-series motors would not work either.

AND since you are talking transmissions and asking about LSD. This came up in a chat on Cars and Bids as an option of LSD for transmissions that don't have them offered. It's called the Phantom LSD - for the record - DO NOT put this in your car. It just looks like a really bad, and I mean a REALLY BAD idea.

And a video of the install......

Nothing really but many here have them and love them. The other option I know of is the OS Giken but they are not cheap - no sir not at all at $1600+. WMW seems to have the Quaife for under $1000 with bearings which is not bad; but still a lot of money. I have no idea how much the factory one is, or even if you can still get them.

You said that your W10; which tells me that you have an R50 (that along with wanting to get a 5 speed). LSD in the Justa is overkill though it would be AWESOME. So totally do it if you got the funds!

If you go with a fully built motor, like what RMW can do with a W10 (8000rpm and 160+bhp), then LSD would be needed - I looked into that, too. But if you are sticking to stock power, I'd save the money on the LSD. You also said that you will do a K-swap later. You will need to pull the transmission for that and if you are able to keep the same Getrag that you will be putting in the Justa, put the LSD in then. The 115bhp in the Justa isn't really sufficient for and LSD unless you are on soft/wet/snowy roads all the time.

You have any idea if bellhousing between 5spd getrag and 6speed is the same? I am only finding adapter plates for K Series to G260's off the E30 (still looking)

If I am able to do that then I think I have found my solution. Swap in the 6 and use it for the K later.

My first thoughts are that since the block is the same they have to be similar but not sure they are the same. Wish I could be of more help there.

I have a quaife in my r53 and love it. I’ve had it for 1 year 12k miles and 3 or 4 track days and it really transforms the driving experience. I got mine for $800 shipped with bearings uk from orangggee. The black flag diff looks like the same design and a bit cheaper but I’m not sure about the build quality.

I saw a factory one from allmag for $400 when I was shopping for diffs, if it was just street use that might be worth it, but since I wanted to track mine, I wanted something more robust.
