Passenger & Driver Window Failure

Hello, miniacs! I know this has been talked about on other threads, I feel like I have read them all with no luck :(

Last summer, I had a problem with my driver's side window, I would hear the clicking but no movement, so I proceeded to bang just above the speaker, and that did the trick and lasted me all summer.

Just got my car out of storage about 2 weeks ago, both passenger and driver side both worked, although were finicky (not going down when button pressed, had to hold once or twice, eventually worked)

Yesterday, after detailing my car including the switch cluster, I go for a drive and try to move my windows down, no luck. The driver side was not working at all, and the passenger was being very finicky. (it was raining very lightly, doors opened)

Now there is no noise coming from the motor on the driver's side the window simply doesn't go up or down. Although the passenger side, you can hear the motor clicking but only when the window switch is in the up position. I try my bang on the door, and BOOM, window down. But right after going down all the way and back up, the window does not go back down, I bang again and nothing happens.

Does this mean I have to replace the motor and regulator on both sides, or just the motor?

Thanks so much.

edit - both passenger & driver side window drops when you open the door and raises when the door is closed.

This thread might help. I did this fix and it is still working years later. If you are mechanically inclined it is not a difficult job. Basically it is the motor and not the regulator, but the regulators do go bad as well.

Window Motor Fix

You have to scroll down a bit to see the photos but essentially the commutator gets corroded with black stuff and has to be cleaned off. Then the brushes ride on nice clean copper and have great contact.

Good luck!

Hey Mike, thanks for the reply.

I do believe it is just the motor and not the regulator as last summer I had to bang the motor to get it open. My mini has 315k on it, so I will par with the new motors only $40 each.

Do you happen to know what signs a failing regulator gives off? As I don’t want to buy a new one if it could is just the motor.

Thanks again!

Hello everyone,

I have found my solution. I just put a new battery in my key fob and re-programmed it. I used the hold the unlock button trick ... boom. both windows go down. I press the switch for them to go up, they both go up. I press the switch for them to go down... nothing.

Headed over to my switch panel to which I have been oblivious to it being very loose. If you wiggle the window button, all the buttons wiggle.

all the switches work going up, but none of them work going down. (can unlock the car via switch, but cant lock it, traction control only off and on by pressing up, fog light off and on by pressing up, etc)

It must be the switch cluster!

Fold up a strip of cardboard & jam it behind the switch panel.
