Break in!!!

I hope I haven't broken anything. I have gone over 4500 rpm's several times as well as used cruse. My MA said I could use cruse but just try not to use it longer than about 15 min. I was crusing on a fun twisty road today and went to downshift to 2nd and put it in Neutral instead (oops) and reved it to right at 5700. I have 675 miles as of today. I have been driving it harder and harder it seems every day. Well not that hard. But every shift gets closer to the 4500 mark. I have had 4 or 5 different ppl as well as a mechanic for over 25 years tell me that it shouldn't hurt anything. But I don't want to end up with a Lemon either. It's so hard to resist though. The car loves to be revved and peel out from time to time (only peeled out once). I know some ppl tell me to drive it like I stole it. which i'm not. I've never been in a wreck or gotten a ticket and don't plan to anytime soon. Will this cause problems If I go over 4500 rpm's? Has anyone had any problems b/c of this?

wildone3c,

I'd recommend you stick to the recommended break in procedure and keep the rpms to under 4500 for the balance of your miles until break in is complete. A few times up to and over 4500 will not hurt you much- nothing to worry about. Relax.

Just keep driving, you're half done.

The Harder you break it in the harder it will run .
You shouldnt be hurting anything those few times you went over 4500. But i bet you the wait for the break in period is just killing you .

I use this method when breaking in any engine. I've raced motorcycles for 20 years now and I always use this method. I will use it when I get my mini too!
Check it out you may like it you may not.

omg is the break in wait killing me. I have opened her up a few times but still not to much over 5000 rpm's. Don't wanna risk anything. I am still looking for a cool twisty track so I can accually "Drive" her. LOL. 925 miles now and countin.

Just to make you paranoid: the computer will KNOW that you've gone over the rpm recommendation, tee hee!

One or 2 accidental revs over 4500 is not going to hurt the motor, but you certainly don't want to maintain any revs over the 4500 limit.

Don't worry!! Break in reccomendations are just that, reccomendations. I'm sure there are tons of Mini owners who zinged their cars to redline within the first hundred miles or so. I've yet to hear of any problems. I have two Mini's. Drove them both home from a dealer 600 miles away. Sure I varied the rpms and speed but I used the cruise... a lot. You've got enough miles on your baby. Go have fun.
