Oil Change...

Switched the MINI over to Royal Purple 10W-30 today, to my surprise it builds boost better.... which makes absolutely no sense. Have no idea what was in it, PO was not a motor head and probably took it to Jiffy lube... But, now its got my preference in it.

Soon... trans will get its fluid swapped

Interesting, but should make no sense at all indeed

Can you do us a favor and see if your boost is consistent until the next oil change ?

Go back to regular mobile 1 etc. and see if the boost goes down?
then we can figure out if it’s really the oil 🤷🏻‍♂️

i have no idea what was in it, mobil 1 wont go in, not a fan of it. when i say boost builds better i mean it appears that boost comes up better on the bottom end, not peak boost. i need to swap the belt & tensioner which will come with a change over to a 17% pulley... that is coming up next.

I was thinking about this on the way into work this morning and I know why it behaves differently, more load...the slightly heavier oil is putting more load on the motor which pulls the vacuum down quicker under acceleration to the point at which the BPV pops closed. Peak boost does not appear to have changed which was my expectation.

So think about this... if your light on the throttle the BPV is slow to close right? Thats all load dependent, with the springs in place to help the hurt BPV it switches at ~3-5"hg and allows boost to build. With the added drag of the different oil weight that occurs quicker. What it will most likely do is hurt top end HP slightly, which I dont care about since my motor will never see near redline.

that makes total sense. Since these cars are so sensitive to vacuum. I’ll do an experiment myself. I do have VGS mod and it’s boosting right away from that

How do you like the VGS mod? I think I have everything to get that done, need to get the belt swapped though, seeing some cracks in it that are concerning.

Just try it out, it's not for everyone but as its totally reversible, its worth a try

Replace the belt first yes!

Yes. What he said 👍. I love it. I also run 17 & + 2 % lightened crank pulley.

Roger that... Another thing I want to investigate while in there is to see how much heat is affecting its performance. i think it was in the BPV bandaid thread where I commented on the boost behaving normal on a cold soaked motor (car outside all night) and then gradually dropping off to its un-happy state. I assume the BPV is loosing its seal. shielding it from heat should allow the spring & seal to live a longer healthier life. I will most likely tape that up after the rebuild and monitor performance moving forward.

Side note... motor is running really well now, even with the hurt #2 cylinder. I "think" its carbon on the valve seats and am considering the Seafoam cleaning in an attempt to clean it up inside. When I do the VGS mod I plan to add an additional tap just for that purpose... and well other engine diag as well.
