The Beautiful Efficiency of a Simple Shift Light

In spirited driving, I have often hit the rev limiter and for a while have wanted a nice minimalist shift light to easily prompt shift change before hitting the limiter, and after looking decided that the Raptor would best fit my needs as well as my aesthetic preferences...

https://www.raptorperformance.com/co...ni-shift-light

...and I chose correctly because it is simple and effective as advertised.

I am highly pleased.

Just installed yesterday and does exactly what it is supposed to do.

Incredibly simple install --- ground wire / tach signal on pin 9 of OBD / switched 12v on pin 1 of OBD
--- and voilà!, it blinks the light when it's time to shift.

Wish they had gone with black instead of grey wire sheathing, may wrap it with heatshrink or something, but not too big of a deal.

Light on activated in image below, pic taken during standstill test phase obviously because it'd be difficult to snap a shot at 7k which I have it set at presently.

Nice job I'm a huge fan of shift lights. Was gonna do the same, but there was mention of a factory style shift light retrofit (R56).

Love those gauges, can't wait to swap mine someday

Nice! I’ve not heard of that brand shift light before.

I’ve had my eye on one of these for my Clubman:

Thanks, glad I finally got around to installing one.

I've kinda got a retro theme going on so I prefer the simple oldschool style,
but those progressive JCW-style lights are cool too,
just a bit too busy for me though.

The original R53 style was mounted center dashtop for some reason,
I think the R56 mounting location is much better.

I always know when I should shift ... I know it was moments before I hit the REV Limiter.

I like the old school light...

A lot of people think about why would they every need a shift light ... they don't realize how hard it is to hear your car over the noise three or four other cars make as you go three or four wide out of a corner.

Cool stuff, thanks for posting the photos.

Motor On!

I use that shift light on my street bike. I kept tagging the limiter during track days.

I love this simple Raptor light, have since reset it to 6900k instead of 7k.

It has been very useful for spirited b-road bombing.

Think I'll relocate it though, swap sides so it'll fill in that little niche under the boost gauge, just think it'll look better.

Oldboy, it looks like you have a red cap/filter on the Raptor shiftlight. Is that necessary to dim it a bit in daytime?
And if that's for daytime, is it blinding at night, or OK?

I have been looking for a simple shiftlight like this. Some of the domestic ones are HUGE, and the original R53/R56 ones are long gone.

The cap is to dim it at night. No cap in daylight.

I have an MSD light in my drag car. It’s a little intense at night. The one on the bike that’s the same as this isn’t bright enough for me in daylight while juggling many tasks trying to stay alive.

I had a pro street drag bike that only had a shift light as a gauge. It kind of spoiled me about watching a tach.

Dumb question regarding how you tapped into the OBD. Did you tap into the wiring behind the OBD plug? Or? What type of connector did you use? I've used the 3M Scotchlok connectors, and they work, but don't seem very tidy....

Yes, the wiring behind the OBD plug.

I used a lazy cheapskate no-name T-tap, which works fine but as you say ain't very tidy in appearance.
