R50/53 Need MTF before 5am tomorrow Walmart?
Need MTF before 5am tomorrow Walmart?
I had to drain and replace my transmission fluid but I check what fluid I had in my garage after draining and it's GL-5. I have to be at work by 6am so I need to know if there's a Walmart transmission fluid I can use or if I can run this GL-5 for 500 miles before the redline gets in.
I know it's too late for this, but in most cases when it comes to cheaper oils the problem is longevity more than anything, so swap it out sooner than later and you should have no issues at all.
I see you on here giving sage advice and I want to thank you. Thank you.
Your words are comforting. Will you check out my other posts? In one I say I grinded gears in third and fourth while going about some spirited driving, and I assumed it was my fault, but as I research I'm beginning to suspect it's my throw out bearing. One thing I forgot to includ in the other posts is that for the last year while the engine is cooler if I engine break in second gear something sounds like marbles being tossed around, but that same noise is now occurring in third gear.
Thank you!

It's really going to be hard to diagnose with that little info.
But... If it were throwout bearing, the noise should not be gear related, and quite often throwout bearing noises are most evident when stopped and in neutral, or when engaging and disengaging the pedal. (Basically when the bearing itself is floating or just making contact)
See if you can pinpoint the source of the noise, somewhat, right side or left side of the car, if it's the passenger side, it is possible that the sound you're hearing is the beginnings of a chain tensioner failure or just chain slop or guide slap in general.
There are quite a few things going on under heavy engine breaking/decel, esp with oil pressure fluctuations.
That being said, yes, miss-shifts can play hell on many components, including syncro's.

Thursday I replaced the transmission mount, and Friday night I drove home a tipsy, and grinded the gears going from second to third and third to fourth. I was getting up to speed to get on the highway so the car was being pushed a little, but nothing abnormal. I figured I was messing up because of the mild inebriated state I was in, it's the second time I've driven with alcohol in me and I woefully regret the decision.
Saturday morning the car slams into reverse, and the clutch was jerky and lacked a smooth feel. Seemed like it was catching and letting go, not full blown slipping. Being in first gear with my foot pressing all the way on the clutch made my car idle much rougher and this idling issue stopped when I pulled the shifter out of first and into neutral. Getting into gear at all in first through fourth was difficult and persisted when I got off work. Symptoms weren't noticable when on a forward slope. If the car was facing down hill I could get into reverse without problem and first gear didn't cause any idling issues
Snight (last night) I replaced the transmission fluid with the only fluid I had, which was 75w - 80 GL-5. I have redline on the way.
Sunday morning (this morning) the shifter slammed into reverse and crunched a little. The clutch continues to be unsure or jumpy, and now something new. With the car out of gear and revving up the engine a whine like maybe rubber on rubber would start at about 2,700RPM. Being in gear didn't change this noise.
I'm gonna try the redline, hopefully it shows up soon. If I need new synchros and gears and bearings how much would it cost to pay someone to replace all of these? Basically a total refresh? If I get a used 60k transmission what are my options? I've seen many 6 speed transmissions off of 04 R53s. Can I use the 6 speed on my car which is originally a 5 speed?
Thank you everyone. BTW I don't think the transmission fluid has been replaced since the last clutch job with the previous owner 5 years ago.
I've replaced the timing chain

Yep, looks like they are shot, most people replace both cables. I had one of mine go and the other side looked like it was ready to pop out. Never seen anyone install those ebay ones. On the cables their are a Condition A and Condition B version.

Thank you for your input, as well as Blwnaway, which I like his/her user name and image.
The upper cable seems solid, and I think this one is trashed because of how long I waited to replace the transmission mount which was shaking like mad around 55mph. I swear switching that thing revealed a slew of issues. Either way I have work on Monday so I'll be happy to tell the community how the eBay shift linkage bushings go. Ultimately I want to swap to the getrag 5 or 6 speed which I'll get new cables for, but for now I need, Clank to roll quickly under it's own power.
Yeet!
