MINI DIED ...NOT EVEN 24hours

Wow I am pissed, I am going to be so late for work. I get up, its a cold day, I go to unlock my doors....NOTHING. I get in manually...and try to start the car...NOTHING.

Last night I heard some type of fan running constantly for a while, and now when I get up this morning its DEAD. WTF. I am so mad right now its not even funny.

It better be the battery.

I think there's a manual release inside the boot....I'm assuming you're able to get inside the car?

Did you have a security system installed by your dealership ? This happened to me once (not with the MINI) when they installed an alarm incorrectly and it drained the battery.

Ok so I called roadside but then I called my father to come jump me. I got the car jumped but it took forever. I drove to the train station and parked my car...and well that noise is STILL THERE.

Try to picture a annoying computer fan from your home PC going on. Its like a Buzzing/Fan sound. I called service department and they say its probably the "Cooling Fan" and its not shutting off. Is there even a Cooling fan? My brother says it may have a bad sensor to detect what the temperature of the engine bay is therefore its not turning off.

What I will try on my own tonight. Jump start the car, then reset the battery to reset the chip. I hope this helps, I really dont wanna have to give it back.

Thats exactly what it is, Alot of times if you run you car hard and then turn it off it will run for a little bit to cool off the engine bay but it should shut off. I would do what you said about reseting the ecu, that might fix it and it might not. But it deffenately sounds like the cooling fan. Good luck with it .

try to calm down...ur MINI is not dying...it's just a bad battery or, more likely, due to the fan that won't turn off...if that's the case, the dealership will replace/fix the sensor/fan so it won't happen in the future...

i know this is inconvenient for u today, but ur car is fine and will be fine...

If the fan is running constantly then the battery will keep on running flat.....get it back to the dealer ASAP.

Do you have Navagation? I have heard in the past that sometimes the CD/DVD unit will try and keep rebooting itself until the battery dies. It's under the pasenger seat.

It's probably just a bad thermal switch. It happens sometimes. They'll replace it and you'll soon forget this happened.

The one thing to keep an eye on is the battery. It's not good to let the battery discharge completely. And it's probably going to happen a few more times before you get the problem fixed. Make sure they thoroughly test the battery.

i will try to reset the ECU tonight, but constantly jump starting it is going to drive me nuts. My service center isn't even open on saturdays and I have no more days left to actually take off. This blows. I hope resetting the ECU will correct the issue. I might just have to drop it off on saturday and have them look at it on monday

If the battery was completely dead, I think the ecu probably reset itself when you jump started the car.

Hey Pat.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems so quickly after getting your car. I am sure that your dealer will get it all fixed for you and then you can start to over develop your face muscles like the rest of us MINI owners have. In otherwords.. a constant smile on your face!!

Hang in there!!

I gotta say, stop futzing around and call Roadside about this NOW.

Don't drive it in yourself, leave it dead and call the tow truck.

Open your hood and check the wiring harness that goes to the front radiator fan, there have been some problems with this. Maybe disconnect and reconnect it.

Interesting that it was completely dead, I was thinking we had a module on the battery that prevents that. At least I think...my battery has something like this on the side.

I've read about quite a few folks having MINIs where the fan would get stuck on and drain the battery. It should be an easy fix for the dealer (eventhough it's a hassle for you). If I were you, I'd simply jump start it, let it get a good charge, and then disconnect the battery terminal each time you leave the car for an extended period. That way the running fan won't drain your battery.

Don't feel too bad. My brand new 2005 MCS only lasted one week and 168 miles before it died. That was more than two months ago now and I haven't had it since. I have to wait until February for a replacement car to arrive. Thus, you're doing fine by my "MINI" standards.

There saying its only going to be a day or two at the most. But what really irks me is that since I dropped it off so late they couldnt get me a loaner or rent a car. Good thing my friend followed me there. I really didn't give them **** about the car but my friend started. He was more mad then me. Everyone, inluding I love my mini. It was just really sad and frustrating having to drop it off at the dealer again.

What I do find funny is that when they go to move it in the morning they will need to jump start the car . I just hope there are NO MORE (knocks on wood) issues with the car.

Thanks for the support everyone, you've made me calm down. I was kinda hysterical at first. Waiting so long for a car and then having to give it back is like....having a baby and then Social Services takes it away.

I SWEAR IM FIT TO BE A FATHER TO MY MINI!!!!!!!

Hang in there Pat. I'm sure you'll be happily motoring again soon. I've been following your saga and I'm sure I would have had similar reactions if it had happened to me.

Your comment about social services cracked me up. It reminded me of the famous phrase, "We're from the government . . . we're here to help."

I'm sure you are a great MINI parent.

Cheers,
