What oil does everyone uses?...

Hello all. Since i am new to mini, i wanted to ask what everyone prefers for those R53. I use Liquid Molly for all my other cars but just want to get an opinion from the Mini pros!

Thanks for the inputs!

I have used AMSOIL lubricants in all of my vehicles for many years. But, there's nothing wrong with Liqui Moly. They make great products.

Does that make life easier with the drain valve? And have you ran into any issues with it? Thanks for the tip!

Mobil 1 was my go to and Pentosin as well for a long time but when I found Liquid Molly my other cars were doing even better with it. Could be the fact that I have only VW/Audi and being in the same family it works out good. If the Mini doesn’t like it, i’ll Go Mobil 1!

just bought my R50. im going to use pentosin 5w-30 from fcpeuro. plus their lifetime warranty on everything. so i just gotta ship back the old stuff. hopefully no more then 20$. that means 20$ oil changes for life.

normally i would use mobil 1, but the 0w-40 does not carry the bmw longlife anymore. but in my family has all way been mobil 1 5w-30 (civic & lexus) 0w-40 (audi). because of their yearly oil rebate, its very cheap to run mobil 1.

In the 16+ years of owning my R53, I've used mostly Castrol and sometimes Mobil 1. I just did an oil change last week and put LiquiMoly in for the first time. I expect it will be fine.

I used Liqui Moly on my R53 for its first oil change under my ownership and have noticed about 0.5 quarts of consumption per 1,000 miles. I suspect that this may be normal for a forced induction motor, but I will likely try a different oil for my next change. I'll probably try Motul 8100 X-cess 5w40. It seems to be very well known to virtually stop oil consumption on many turbocharged applications (several R56 owners use it as well and report little to no oil consumption).

Given the same viscosity, why would one brand of oil have less consumption? Seal swell additive?

Haven't done my first oil change on my 2005 JCW but I plan to use Amazon Basic synthetic. $17 for 5 quarts. If I was going to track the car, I'd probably go with Amsoil. I had an issue with low oil pressure on track days in my Vette when temps got to 290F. Used Mobil1 and Royal Purple before finding Amsoil held oil pressure the best.

Going to stick with Shell T6 5w-40.

Just did the oil service last night with the kid. 5K mile interval and used about a quart. No weird noises and oil temps are stable.

why use amazon synthetic, when Mobil 1 is 12-14$ for 5 quarts.

yearly rebate promotion from mobil, makes it cheap to run top teir oil.

Amsoil 5W-40 heavy-duty synthetic diesel oil. Might switch to their LL-01 rated 5W-40 Euro oil for the next change.

+1 on the Fumoto. Pipe it straight into a milk carton, no mess no fuss.

Never thought of it that way, $20 oil change for life is good...

I will keep that in mind as well. I was under the assumption that it was 5w30 for the R53, is that not correct? I will keep that Motul 8100 X-cess 5w40 in mind if the oil consumption theory is correct, as long as it works fine and the car reacts correctly to it outside of the oil consumption.

I use to use the diesel version of the 5W40 as well for my other cars, each different power plants , one 1.8T, one 2.7TT and the other one 4.2TT but i transfer the 1.8T first to the 5W40 from Liquid Molly (was Pentosin) and it was a success as far as feel, power and oil consumption so i transfer the other two as well and it's been a success.

Any issues with install or clearance or anything like that?

Plenty of room. Just need to pop off the PS fan temporarily to install.

While the oils have the same viscosity they may have different evaporation characteristics which means one oil is less like to evaporate especially when the oil is very hot. For my JCW I don't know how hot the oil gets -- but I suspect it gets plenty hot -- but with my Hellcat the oil gets to 230F and this is driving around town. (If I have the A/C on coolant temperature is kept around the 200F to 202F range. If I do not have the A/C on the coolant temperature is "limited" to 217F as the fans come on at this temperature and shut off at 208F.) On the freeway the oil temperature drops considerably falling to the 190F range if I drive a good number of miles.
