Insurance costs for 06 JCW

What's everyone doing for insurance for their older MINIs?

I am a senior citizen with a clean driving record. I do live in Michigan, which I know has ridiculous insurance costs. That being said, a family member pays approximately the same for their C6 Corvette convertible as I am paying for my MINI. I think it's time to start some serious shopping around. Any tips or advice? TIA.

I have a newer MINI so no help on pricing. What exactly are you paying and what coverages and through whom? I found major differences in price between the National companies who advertise on TV all the time and the local producers who keep market costs low and don't have the same profit needs.

Shopping around as you mentioned is the first part and then research the companies with lower premiums to make sure you aren't buying a headache.

Local company. Home and multi-auto discount. $1000 deductible. Almost $900 a year for an '06 JCW.

Yes, Michigan auto insurance sucks. But paying more than a C6 Vette convertible?!? That's crazy. As a comparison, I just checked Hagerty, with whom I've had good luck with other classic cars. 3000 miles a year, $1000 deductible, $14K guaranteed value (it's a low miles, really nice car. That's probably a bit high, but not by that much...) $811 a year to insure.

Gah! This is crazy.

With multicar, and my 2005 justa being a second car, I pay $400 every 6 months and have $500 deductible comp/collision on mine. I am in my 40's with a clean record over the last several years.

Mine is not that bad, the multi-car helps for both my MINIs.

I am an hour south of Hartz in Perrysburg, Ohio. Full coverage insurance for an 04 non-S is a bit over $620 annually. I believe Michigan's no-fault insurance is the biggest reason for higher premiums.

And I could almost buy that as an excuse. But an '06 MINI more expensive to insure than an '08 Corvette convertible?!? That just seems like madness. The Vette is worth more and has a V8, not a four cylinder.

They way in repair cost and part cost (which is higher than most cars), i have noticed that in general MINIs cost more to insure than a used high powered sports car, high end luxury car or suv..

It is hard to compare without knowing all the facts. A different neighborhood could be a factor as would level of coverage, quality of the carrier, number of vehicles on the policy, ratio of drivers to vehicles and so on.

Before I bought my MINI, I called my broker and asked how much my premium would go up if I bought my MINI, he said $400.00. I bought the MINI and the premium went up $1,500 a year. He did not factor in the fact that I had 3 cars and 4 drivers before the addition and 4 cars and 4 drivers after the addition. I specifically told him that it would be a limited use vehicle and not a primary vehicle for anyone. My 16 year old daughter was classified as being a primary driver on a car. The fact that only one of us knew how to drive a stick was irrelevant as was the fact that the MINI was parked in the garage under a cover for 5 months of the year. I need a new broker!

Pretty much spot-on for what I pay, with the same carrier, but in Massachusetts.
