maybe it has something to do with the fact that its a right hand drive mini. Could be a different option or something.

Aussie MINI's come that way. Apparently, the speedo NEEDS to be in front of the driver down there.

So...

We can start a petition with MINIUSA. Anyone up for the task? If there is enough interest I'm sure they would fall for it.

i'm a fan of the speedometer in the middle. I mean, your rpm's are more important than your speed anyways.

If I remember correctly, I think there is a law in Australia where the speedometer has to be in the driver's direct view.

yep, it's in the Australia Design Rules for cars that the speedo has to be within a certain angle of the drivers line of vision, unfortunately the center speed in the mini was a couple of degrees outside this range....
given that where I live we can (and do) get booked for 3km/h over the limit in a 100km/h zone , having the speedo in front could just be a good thing....

I thought they drove on the correct side of the road in Aussieland though, guess I was wrong.

Yes. Australia drives on the correct side. The US does not. In Aus, the bonnet release is on the driver's side, where it's supposed to be.

The real pain is swapping from one side to the other as you change countries.

I never thought it was and I’ve driven both ways for many years. You just have to have a situational awareness about where you are.

I never found "driving on the wrong side of the road" to be the big issue. Maybe because you are extremely aware of it. The bigger issues I found were that things being on the wrong side. I turned on the wipers a number of times when I was about to make a turn since the indicators and wipers are swapped. The gearstick is on the wrong side, you have to shift with the other hand. The CAR is on the wrong side! I always find myself riding the curb for the 1st couple of days when I change countries.

And watch those roundabouts! Checking that you're clear on the left does NOT mean that there isn't a huge garbage truck bearing down on you from the right. Don't ask me how I know.

I would never want the speedo in place of the tach? Why? One of the main things I love about the MCS is because it has ONLY the tach in front of you-thats all you need. After a while, because I like to pay attention to the road, I ask myself "how fast am I going" hmm about 4,000 in 4th should be around 75 to 80. ( I just remembered redline 4th gear was bout 90, were getting a replacement mcs soon-). You learn your gearspeeds, and dont even have to take your eyes off the road. If they were swapped, and you were cookin' it, then you would be in trouble. The saturn ion redline has the whole pod in the middle, including the tac and most journalist hate it. I love the tach and speedo the way they are-KEEP EM! (no petition either!)
