R50/53 Cheap Ebay condenser, damaged lower line
Cheap Ebay condenser, damaged lower line
I was in the process of replacing my A/C condenser with an aftermarket ebay cheapo and the lower port looked a litle bit too small. Well I pushed the line in against my better judgement and damaged the yellow part that goes in before the o-ring.
Is this part critical to ensure no leaks in addition to the o-ring or is it some sort of general guide?
If it is critical, is it safe to assume that I have to replace the entire A/C line or can that piece itself be replaced? If that piece can be replaced, what is it called and where do I get it? If I have to replace the entire A/C line, is it a hard job? It looked like a tough job. I couldn't see the line at all from the top at some point and did not crawl underneath to check.
Thanks for any info.

That is part of the seal. Not sure if it is replaceable. I would think that if it’s damaged it may leak. I’m assuming you have a vacuum pump to recharge your system. You can try replacing all the O rings, put it back together and then pull a vacuum on the system and see if it holds vacuum. If it doesn’t then you know I won’t hold. But be sure to replace any O rings on fittings that you disassembled to narrow down the leak. Put a little AC oil on the seals when you reassemble the connections.
That yellow plastic band is to center up the A/C line to the condenser and there is supposed to be a "new" brown colored o-ring behind the yellow band.Make sure you clean the yellow band (yours appears good in the pics ) first clean with Lacquer thinner or Goof-Off :: but, don't saturate the yellow plastic or it will melt (also helps swell the plastic for tighter fit ) ps: coat both o-ring & yellow seal with a/c oil only.
Thanks guys. Yes, I do have a cheapo weird vaccum pump from years ago...the one that you connect to your compressor. I have to try and figure out if it works, how to work it, and see if I have all the parts for it first.
That yellow piece has a tear on the right hand side and is a bit warped beyond what the pics will show. At some points while turning, there is a distance between it and the new o-ring due to warpage (not pictured).
Would you still try to reuse it given all of this?
Thanks.

Well if you draw down a vacuum and the Snoop bubble leak detector fluid shows a leak ,then you will have to somehow find this from an Auto A/C parts supplier in you area. I looked on line and was not successful in my findings .I buy all of my BMW/Mini Cooper parts from partscontainer on E-Bay and the prices are good...
I would try it. If the yellow part is a guide then it probably doesn’t have much sealing propertes. Just replace the o ring with correct one. If it holds vacuum then your good. If it doesn’t then you’ve only lost some time. Most AC lines only have an o ring sealing them anyway. You can get a complete set of AC o rings of various sizes at Harbor Freight for about $10.

Never used them but, I like their Pittsburg impact sockets...
Did you get it to seal? What does the cheap ebay port part looks like? Wonder is the port that inserts is too small or something?

Looks like a 10.8mm oring is brown one factory and green aftermarket.

Hey everyone. I didn't see the additional posts.
I ended up using a green o-ring that I had laying around from a previous car. None of the old o-rings would fit and the new one wouldn't either. Tore them all trying.
Here is the condenser that I could never get to fit:
https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&item=162405711373&vi ew=all&tid=1816620144006
I then ordered from Rock Auto and got this one:
VARIOUS MFR MC3030101 {#64531490572, CNDDPI3254}
This was the top one on the list with a heart in it. To my surprise, it arrived bent. I have never had any problems like that from Rock Auto.
I was so fed up I stepped on the condenser to see if I could straighten it out and not bend fins prior to having to go through the hassle of returning this condenser too. It was just a bit warped when I was done but the gamble paid off. I was also shocked that the condenser shipped pressurized. Not sure if that was normal.
Anyways, no leaks so far.
