Odd A/C noise

I just acquired a fairly low mile 06 JCW and everything seems to work but there is one quirk. If im sitting still with the a/c on occasionally it make hissing noise like steam escaping. Air flow is nice and cold though. Thoughts? Thanks!

Are you sure it’s the AC? Where is the sound coming from? AC comp, inside dash?

Sounds like it's coming from inside, behind the central dash pod.

Could be a vacuum leak associated with the blend door actuators. Does it go away when you change the vent control? If you had a coolant leak that you could hear your AC would quickly stop cooling and operating.

'06 ... getting some age to it, so a possibility is part of the foam insulation strip from the air inlet box has gotten into the cage fan and is rubbing from time to time.

Motor On!

Other cars and my mini does that as well. It's usually the expansion valve making the noise, initially when it turns on and off, as the pressures either increases between the high and low side, or equalizes between them. Sometimes its just because its noisy, but sometimes it's because its undercharged.

It was warm enough to try out the a/c today on my way home from work. I noticed the sounds is closer to something pressuring. The hiss starts off low, gradually builds up then stops. Id say about ten minutes between occurrences. The actuator door for the recirculate function is getting kinda "creaky" as well.

Sounds like the system pressurizing. It may be low. Check the coolant levels. If you don’t have a set of gauges have it done by a service tech. Also verify that your low speed fan is functioning. If it’s not it can blow your AC compressor when the pressures rise during hot weather. Ask me how I know.
