My argument is not whether or not to do the work, but rather if you are going to pull the crank you might as well break it down completely and overhaul it. Why chance putting it back together with the same unmachined crank and cylinders without new rings, etc. let a machine shop check the block and renew it.

Good points.

My experience in overhauling motors... if the rod bearings are not 'impaired' the mains will probably be ok... pulling the lower girdle does not intimidate me either... and I may just check it out... if all checks out and plasti-guages well... I see no need to do the mains. This should take very little time... and you make a good argument for tanking the block. I rarely machine a crank on any of the engines I build... unless, of course, it needs it.

Wondering how well balanced these are from the factory in Brazil?

I didn't pull the engine but this is what I did:

New vlv cover gasket (I regret not doing the spark plug gaskets too now)
new hydraulic tensioner
new belt tensioner
new cooler gasket (triangle) (i'd recommend oil cooler/coolant gaskets while at it)
new crank o-ring (i'd get a dipstick o-ring as well)
new water pump
new water pump gasket
new water pump flange gasket (i'd replace the one on the opposite side/blockoff plate)
new pan gasket
degreased
appliance paint black
mild rebuild on s/c; (at least replace the drive side gasket and fresh oil)
cleaned flashing/casting of s/c
mild ported s/c outlet
port matched charge pipe to s/c inlet
epoxy filled/ported charge pipe
new injectors (at least clean/reflow them)
new passenger's side engine mount

I installed my 15% pulley in vehicle because I was worried about belt alignment. I removed off vehicle.
Check/fix A/c clutch function
check/fix rad fan resistor
