R50/53 rough start when cold
rough start when cold
2003 Mini Cooper S 150K miles when temps are below freezing and it hasn't been started in a few days the Mini will turn over but has a hard time staying running. You have to play with the gas pedal to keep it running. Usually stalls once or twice. After a few minutes 2-3 you can take your foot off of the gas pedal and it will idle fine no roughness. Reminds me of an old school carb not a full injected car. Any thoughts??
Not since before I replaced the fuel pump two months ago, which it was doing at that time. What other areas can allow the bleed off? I need to check it again. I know I have a problem with the pass side sending unit as I have been running out of gas at a quarter tank, which is a common problem. It’s so frustrating that they designed such complications into these cars that problems like this exist with only 60,000 miles on them.
I had similar issues when cold, and still do occasionally, but changing the fuel filter, and the fuel filter cap (it had cracked and was leaking) has helped a lot. I do let the fuel pump prime first when its really cold, and that seems to help with the car starting faster. I would say that if your car is running out of fuel at 1/4 tank, the pickup tube is not installed or situated correctly. The two may be independent of each other, but there may be a fitting not completely attached that is affecting your cold start.

It’s my understanding from researching the out of gas at 1/4 tank issue is that it’s usually caused by the transfer valve on the pass side sending unit/filter housing. I haven’t changed letting the tank go below 1/4 since I changed the fuel filter except for the other day when I let my son drive the car. He let it go slightly below 1/4, being ignorant if the problem, without it running out of gas. I’m wondering if I jostled something back into working again after I changed the filter. I’m going to drive it to below a 1/4 and see if it’s working again. I’ll carry a spare gallon just in case.
Sorry if this seems out of content,
I read in a previous thread that starting the R53 (maybe others too) would have some quirks of you did not wait for the startup process to complete. (wait for gas light to go from red to orange)
Ever since I waited for this I would start up much faster, before I would have to crank a while or maybe twice to get engine to run.
Maybe all it's doing is waiting for fuel pressure to come up before cranking
, but it works!
