The cover can be removed while engine is still in car. Just a little bit of a pain.
Youre the man. I have until Monday to fix my chattering. I just replaced the tensioner but it was so quiet I didn’t realize I was low on oil until it was too late and burned the oil. Since the burn the chattering has been intermittent, loud and fast, getting worse as the engine warms up. Should I just replace the tensioner again?
Im changing the oil pan gasket, and cam crank sensor too.
Also if I change just the rails I’m at a stand off with the oil plugs. An Allen wrench started to slip and strip the hole, and a chissle isn’t working either.
i had a friend use a black bar on an Allen wrench and consistently push firmly while I smacked a chissle on the outside of the plug. I went at a forgiving angle to avoid peeling metal off.
in my left hand I hold a small chissle which I tapped with a hammer with increasing intensity while my colleague pressed with increasing intensity.

Wow... didn't have the much a problem with mine. Maybe they were replaced and they were torqued too tightly.
Are you doing the chain aswell. If you are you will need the camshaft holding tool. An if you are going to remove the cover. You will need 2 new oil pump seals an a new front seal.
EWK W10 W11 R50 R52 R53 Camshaft Locking Fixture Timing Chain Special Tool for Mini Cooper 2001-2006
This is the only photo I can manage to upload. SOFAR the engine is doing well. By the end of February I’ll be redoing the repair and completely replacing the cam and crank sprockets along with the chain. I’ll produce a video with accurate information.
Thank you Way! Those are very reasonably priced! I’ll purchase some time after my wife’s car is repaired. You’ve always provided excellent details on parts.
I sent you the tool you need to pull crankshaft pulley. Will be there Saturday. Just please return once you are finished.
Make sure you use some anti seize on thread of the tool. Or it will bugger up the threads.
Watch this video. It will show you how to use the correctly.

I was able to get the timing cover off by just yanking it past the AC pulley. I think that I will need to takeoff the AC to get the timing case back on, but if someone knows a better way please let me know.
What I thought was the compressor actually seems to be the water pump. I’m not to the point where I put the timing cover back on, but I put it in for front service mode in case I need to take the water pump off. Any advice or comments about the water pump?
While you are there go ahead an replace the crankshaft sensor seal. They are known for leaking. As you can see in picture. I replaced my water pump. Along with my alternator, belt an tensioner. Plus all my cooling lines an thermostat . Since I was in service mode Plus I was at the 90k mark.
It's not hard. Just take your time an keep asking questions on here We will be happy to help. BTW how did the puller do?
