It would be nice if you told us what the recalls are for and perhaps the build date of your car.

2 recalls

both emissions related and dated October 04

1. "certain" 02 and 03 S, crankcase breather line...they want to replace the line;
04E-A03

2. "certain" 02, 03, 04, tank leakage diagnostic system...come in to get new software.... I guess we no longer need a cause to get flashed to the newest software version. Damn....I was happy with the old crap I had....didn't seem to have the problems you new guys do. O4E-A01

Early 02 S
and a '79...
I wonder what O4E-A02 was . . .

I got the 04E-A01 recall yesterday.

"Voluntary emissions recall to update tank leakage diagnostic software. MINI USA has determined that your MINI automobile tank leakage diagnostic system contains a software error preventing the correct detection of a possible evaporation emission leak".
It's purely a software upgrade.
If I fail to get it done:
"If you live in a State with a SMOG Check program, your vehicle must pass an emissions test, as required by State law. Without having this Recall performed your vehicle may be more likely to fail this test. For vehicles registered in the State of California, the completion of emissions recall repairs is required prior to vehicle registration renewal."

Well, if you want to check if your MINI has a recall... or any other vehicle for that matter... you will want to check out the NHTSA

Hope this helps!!!!

My MCS is a 7/02 build that has had no problems for awhile and I believe never had any ECU updates, I hope it does not mess anything up.

Mine's a 5/02 build MC and had the 04E-A01 tank pressure sensor software upgrade v39.01. It took about half an hour's work, but I waited at least 1 1/2 hour. There were only two MINI mechanics available that day, and the BMW mechanics were very busy with the X-3 tie-rod Recall fix.

I am trying to decide whether to get this recall done. The car is running great so I would prefer not to change the softwrae unless there is a good reason. The explanation from MINI just doesn't make sense. If the problem is with detection of a leak then it would have zero effect on the emissions of a car without a leak - so why are they saying the car is more likely to fail a smog test without the upgrade ... unless they think most cars leak! There has to be a significant risk for MINI to go through the expense of a recall so there must be something about this that I am missing.

I checked mine (0ct 02 build) and found 2. The first was the strut bolt that's already taken care on. I need help figuring out the second. Here's part of what came up:

Make: MINI Model: COOPER S Type: ANY Year: 2003 Recall Number: 02V277005 Summary:CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES EQUIPPED WITH NORCOLD REFRIGERATOR COOLING UNITS MODEL NUMBERS 1200LR AND 1200RIM WITH SERIAL NUMBERS BETWEEN 700000 AND 1008700 ........

WTF!! Didn't know I owned a motor home. Could they possibly be talking about the MINI cooler?

My guess would be that the update is to fix a fault in the software that causes the system to diagnose a leak when in reality there isn't one. That may affect how the computer manages the engine which may affect the emissions system and cause your car to fail.

I got a the emissions recall notice too. I've still got version 31 on my 09/02 mfg. MCS. However, I run a number of other mods such as a UNIChip (programmed for pulley, CAI and catback). Will version 39 affect roadability of any of my aftermarket mods?

I got the same two and really don't want my software updated, but can't do just one of them. When I show up they'll do both anyway. Looks like I'll have to plan that 600 mile trip to a MINI dealer. May as well get it fully serviced while I'm there.

I have an 06/2002 production MCS, and I received the bulletin also. I prefer to get my warranty work done at a dealer 90 miles away, so I don't plan to schedule immediately...

Does anyone understand what this type of software tweak might do to gas mileage? to power?

If someone gets it done before me, please post your results! I'll do the same...

I was at the dealer today getting new snows, asked about the recall, and when they looked up my file,it was updated at my last service in July.I thought all the update did was that when the tech. plugs in his computer, that the data could be sent to MINI Canada.I guess there where a few more software upgrades bundled together.I have not noticed any difference in My 03 MC

This recall I believe is for the PCV hose replacement. correct me if I am wrong...see thread https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...light=pvc+hose

I am coming to this conclusion as my wife and I both have 02 MINI S, after reading the above thread I checked my hose..gave it a good squeeze and it was soft and oily, (not what a guy wants with his hose ) so...I had it replaced. We received the recall notices, my wife received the 2 listed in earlier thread I only received the ECU emission recall, no hose replacement.

I'm still waiting for some more data to decide if the emission recall is really warrented....i have passed emissions w/o problems and I am hesitant about having the ECU monkeyed with.

I got the same in the mail today for a MCS March 03 build. Hope they don't screw things up, the drivability is quite good these days.

regards,
Red

Yeah I was told only "certain" cars got the recall. The service guys did not know what made some cars "certain".But I notice no difference, with the tank leakage software upgrade.

According to askMINIUSA:

Vehicles effected by the 04E-A03 recall were produced from late June 2002 up to late July 2003.

Just email MINIUSA asking if your May 2004 build is subject to the O4E-A01 recall campaign.
