Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign

Any one get one of these?
“Mini Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to Update Tank Leakage Diagnostic Software”
I just go it in the mail today, says Mini USA has determined that your Mini automobile tank leakage diagnostic system contains a software error preventing the correct detection of possible evaporation emissions leak. I goes on to say they will upgrade my ECU with the latest software.
Should I do it? Has anyone else done it?
Reference campaign Number 04E-AO1

I believe that is v39. I had it done last week and it seems to help a little with milage also. Have not put enough miles on to tell, Tim

I think it is for both the MC and MCS (and else where MINI1). As it was explained to me, it will help with the Check engin light faults. As in when you start the engine with the gas cap not properly secured. I never had any trouble. The update was done last time I was at the dealership (Va safty inspection). I hit on a slow day and they did the update.

More of what the letter says

It says:
“Mini USA has determined that certain 2002, 2003, and 2004 model year Mini automobiles may not fully meet the Federal Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board emissions control requirements. In Order to remedy this situation, Mini USA is conduction a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign. We are asking you as the owner of an affected vehicle to contact your Authorized Mini dealer at your earliest convenience to have the repair carried out.
Problem: Mini USA has determined that your Mini automobile tank leakage diagnostic system contains a software error preventing the correct detection of a possible evaporation emission leak.
Mini USA will repair your vehicle free of charge for parts and labor. Your authorized Mini dealer will update the engine control module with the latest software. The complete repair should not take more than two hours……………
…………If you; live in a State with a SMOG check program, your vehicle must pass an emissions test, as requires by State law. Without having this Recall performed your vehicle may be more likely to fail this test.” It gets more specific with California Cars.
Another sentence/paragraph; “Failure to have this free repair work performed could be determined as lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle and could jeopardize your full protection under the emission warranty provisions.”

By the way I have 2004 MCS licensed in June.

Yah, I got that one and another one having to do with the flat tire monitoring system not producing an audible sound like stated in owners manual.

My MCS is an early 4/04 build

Wasn't there a blog about BMW getting dinged for not meeting CARB standards a while back? I wonder if this is related?

I was afraid of something like that – are you running stock MCS?
My MCS is stock with the V38 software, that software was installed because I complained of the Yo-Yo effect. Well most of the problems went away with the software upgrade, there is only a small stumble but otherwise it has been running pretty good. Oh and the course curise control works much better with the V38.
What were/are the negative effects of the with the emissions recall campaign that you have experienced?

Mine is HIGHLY modified and I had zero YO-YOing before the update... the tech was nice enough to install the JCW software free since they screwed it up... better but still not as good as it was before the botch job... still has some bogging until 4k

I just had my 10k service and they updated mine. From what I gather, it is indeed v39 for emissions related issues. If this is the case, everyone will be forced to get it as soon as they come in for a service call. I had v36 from the factory and only drove from the dealership home. it seems smoother than v36 so far.

mattcoon, & ep’s fitz;

Are your cars stock?
I think you are right all cars in SMOG required areas will need the upgrade.

stock, except for the crome grille and boot. I noticed a little yo-yo after the chrome boot install, but after v39 that's gone .

04E-A03 for the crankcase breather line may deteriorate (emissions concern)

Got my notice today. Scheduled for service tomorrow. So the code 04E-A01 means the tank diagnostic system software update? My Change Card shows in the VIN those code numbers, in addition to the regular 17-digit VIN number.

Got the emissions recall notice also for both of my MINIs ('02 CVT and '04 MCS). Will take both cars in sometime next week or the following one.

There is no go around this one. If you want to keep your emissions warranty, you have to get the software update done.

They may change the breather line but they may NOT mess with the ECU. I have powerchip and they are not going to cause me all kinds of problems by overwriting it.

Well here in California, we're forced to have this upgrade.

DMV will check for the upgrade before allowing re-registration.
I had it done Tuesday, and I'm very happy.

All traces of my yo-yo are gone, and throttle is much smoother with almost no overshoot. Certainly no stumble.

I see this as MINI recalling those cars with faulty software (yo-yo stumble etc) and using the emissions as the 'excuse' to get things fixed.

Works for me, this 03 MCS is now better than my 02 MCS, which never had any yo-yo, stumble etc etc issues

Had the breather hose done at the same time too - so no more dying moose howls' from the engine bay

Chris.
