R50/53 Correct me if I am wrong but......
This article states that the throw form 2nd to 3rd is so much niftier in the SVT. Don't the SVT and the Cooper S have the SAME Getrag? I love to read the newspapers.....
They might be the same Getrag transmission, but manufacturers always tune or tailor a transmission to a specific application. It's kind of like if the we both bought the same new suit, and had it tailored. In the end, your tailoring could make the suit look better on you than it does on me.
I'll also add that most Newspaper auto reporters wouldn't know a slick shifter if it fell out the sky, landed on their face, and wiggled.

>>and as far as I can tell, there's more than one type of tranny made by Getrag... You'd have to check to see if the models were the same...

There is definitely more than one type of tranny made by Getrag...my boyfriend has a Getrag transmission in his Toyota Supra, and its not the same as the one in the MINI...

but, the tranny in the Cooper S is the same as the SVT Focus. Soopa has it right, there is a certain level of tune with any transmission. the Cooper's is just set up a little differently than the SVT's.
Remember, this article is titled Ford Focus SVT way out in front with its zippy, economical style
Wonder if the author, Mark Savage, has a brand new Fort Focus SVT in his garage courtesy of the friendly (and terrified) folks at Ford Motors?
You can certainly tell him what you think about his expertise in comparing apples to oranges thorugh his published e-mail address visible beside the article.Savageonwheels@cs.com
His opinion is not going to create one iota of buyer's remorse the next time I see a Ford Focus SVT that I now know is superior with its 7 additional horsepower.
