R50/53 What Type of Tire is on Your MINI?
Hi all!
I have 16 inch Dunlop Sport tires on my BRG MINI Cooper. I am wondering how they will do in the snow. Anyway, what type of tires do you have on your MINI and how does it perform in different conditions?
I hope this topic is satisfactory for those of you who are itching to post new messages
Thanks

Molly came with the Goodyear runflats. a performance tread I believe. I'm not terribly impressed, but that isn't to say that they're bad either! They grip pretty well on dry pavement, but seem to be a little slick on the wet. ...I don't even want to see what they're like in the snow.
I'm curious to hear from anyone with the Continental all-seasons - especially 15"? Have you gotten into any snow with them; how are they? I know all about the argument for buying snows, but I just lucked into a decent deal with someone's take-offs that already have these tires and would hate to have to go and spend even more for a 3rd set of tires.

I have the 16" all season Dunlops. I will probably switch to a performance tire next spring, non-runflat. These tires are okay, I would just like more of a performance tire. We have dry roads most of the time in Northern Cal..
I have the Pirelli Euphori@ 205/45 R17 84V Run Flats. I live in Northern CA and we just had a great test with the last storm. In all areas, accelleration, cornering, and braking, these tires stuck to the ground exceptionally well!
I do still have a concern in ref. to snow conditions in the Sierras. Has anyone with these tires found a correct match of Cable Chains that fit and will work well in snow and ice conditions as I sure would like some feedback.

If you have performance tires on your MINI and you are planning to drive it in the snow I would strongly recommend getting snow tires to exchange them out with.

mine came with Dunlop SP9000 (205/45) performance tire, so far this tire has decent grip in wet condition, but I would prefer wider (215/45 yoko AVS100).
Don't know about the performance in the snow, but I think all performance tires has bad grip in snow specially with the low profile (below 45).
The advantage: MINI is front wheel drive....

I just changed off my 17" Goodyear runflats (S-lite wheels) for 4 16" snows (Blizzaks) mounted on steel wheels.
While I wouldn't say that I'd run Blizzaks all year round, I will say that the move to a non-runflat tire on a lighter wheel is a change for the better. And that's in addition the need for a winter (esp. ice) tire during the winter where I live. The 17" S-lite wheels are some mongo HEAVY wheels! You notice it when taking them off. Also, the runflat tires are definitely heavier than a standard tire. I don't autocross, so unsprung weight isn't a huge concern...but having less weight down there also makes for general performance improvements. With the lighter tires/wheels I'm now running, the car (MCS) feels slightly more spritely. Also, the crashing harshness of the ride -- which I feel is responsible for many of the body/trim/interior rattles and groans I experience -- is reduced. I like the firm ride of the sport suspension...but with different tires, the firmness is still there without some of the harshness.
Come spring, I'll probably move to a performance, non-runflat tire...and if cost wasn't an issue (which of course it will be
), I'd upgrade to a lighter wheel too...maybe going down to 16".

TireRack. The same deal that is written about several times in the Tire forum (which no one seems to look at or post to :???: on this site...witness the fact that we're having a tire discussion right now in the general interest section). The total for the 4 mounted tires was about $500.
I believe the moderator is Dan...and I called him. But I did shop around, and TireRack definitely had the best deal, and they're good to deal with. I've bought tires from them several times in the past. BTW, they also carry some plastic wheel covers that look sort of a little bit like the S-lite wheels (if you squint). I'm a bit mixed on those, but figure I'll give it a week or so before I try running with just the black painted steel wheels....which don't look too bad either. Conveys a sort of utilitarian New England kind of image

Actually 205, like 2MINIs said, is the width and 45 is the sidewall, but it means that the sidewall is as tall as 45% of the width. Also 17 is the wheel diameter.
Cheers

I have the Dunlop Sport 5000 runflats that come on the factory 16" MCS wheels. These tires plus the traction control give me a lot of confidence in the rain, but they suck in the dry. I have to really be careful to keep from lighting them up when taking off with the traction control disabled. I'm sure I'll lose more than one stop light drag race in the future just because of poor traction. I don't know what the tread life is, but I don't expect these Dunlops to last very long.
bb..actually, it's sort of embarassing, but I actually got the 15" wheels/tires (mistyped 16 by accident). But anyway, they look great and in the higher profile snowtire fill the wheel wells just fine. As is often said...tall and skinny (relatively) is the way to go with a snow tire.
