Had a run with an Audi S1 today...
Hi guys,
As you might have read in my other topic, i'm VERY interested in how the R53 (especially when tickled a little) competes with competitors.
Yesterday i came across an Audi S1 Quattro on the highway and i was ready to find out, since the guy came with quite a speed and already started tailgating the guy in front of him: the Audi had a youngster inside and the Audi logo's were dipped matte black, so i already knew what sort of person was inside.
I shifted back to 5th and moved to the fast lane and started chasing him.
Our speeds were the same (approximately 75 mph) and when the guy in front of him moved to the 'slow' lane (giving him space), he went for it and i followed.
For a brief moment he was faster, but when the revs builded, i started closing in and i had to get off the accelerator to avoid bumping into him :P
The speed was approximately 110-115 mph at that moment.
He wanted to go another round and i think he also shifted back to 5th, since he left quite a bit faster than the first time, but he also ran out of breath sooner and moving to the slow lane, giving me space to overtake him.
I looked at him to give him a thumbs up, but he avoided contact.
Such a shame, i had good fun :D
Had this exact same thing with a Golf MKVI GTD some time ago, he really avoided contact when i wanted to give him a thumbs up after our little race!
What are your experiences with racing these sort of cars?
I'm really curious, since i know the VAG cars can be made stupid fast!

If you want to drive fast and competitive, find a SCCA chapter out there and learn how to drive.
Wow, i really opened a can of worms on this one LOL
Forgot to tell you guys, this highway was actually in my backyard, since i have acres of land to spare here in the little Netherlands
True story, it was all private roads
Now, anyone here wanting to answer the actual question?

So you've got daily traffic on private property not to mention a straight up highway?
As well as what's dipped emblems got to do with anything? I hate chrome, blacked out badges look great.
No one is going to chime in on experiences of street racing since I'm pretty sure you are the only person I have ever heard of that has a "highway" complete with random strangers traffic through your own private property. You running a toll booth??

).....attempt to race other cars, and run triple digit speeds, don't get on here and brag about it. You had to get off of the gas to avoid bumping him.....and triple digit speeds? Sounds like you were not only endangering your life...but the life of the guy you were screwing around with. I'm guessing you haven't been driving very long...huh?
Wow, i quess there are 200-300-400 hp cars on these forums and no one ever running high speeds on public roads, yeah right :S
Obviously there's no one sharing their experience with me, that's okay.
I've been driving for quite some time and have done some track days here and there, so no discussion about that.
I'm used to the dutch forums, where we tell pretty much everything we stumble upon.
Didn't know it was that big of a deal over here, never had any of these responses before on any forum.
I'm convinced that most people out there with their big 250+ hp setups do crazy stuff, even on public roads, talking about it doesn't make it worse.
Doing it again and again, will.
We all do something naughty sometimes...

Yes....everyone plays around a little bit......but posting up on a public web forum about how you broke multiple laws while playing around is not very smart at all......at least not here in the US.
I understand, is there a serious risk in the states when posting that stuff?
Here the authorities don't give a **** about any of that, so i'm unaware, but apologies for that.
Didn't know i would offend so much people by posting something like this, it's not like i'm a serious felon or anything lol

Your not a serious felon until someone gets hurt or dies then it's too late. Ownership of forums don't want the responsibility of being sued. Young impressionable people read these posts and then go and think it's ok to drive like a bat out of hell.
It's a bit odd that people are allowed to post continually about changing out emissions devices on cars against the law but nobody complains bout that.

Yeah exactly what i was thinking, a decat is a serious crime over here, while everyone is posting that day after day, also illegal.
Not saying driving fast isn't wrong, but removing emission equipment is enough to have your car impounded over here.

Removing an emissions device will not kill someone. Running through traffic at triple digit speeds on a public roadway can......that's stupid teenager stuff right there.
.....I wouldn't even call that "messing around", I would call that "endangering peoples lives".

Emissions are already killing people every day at a faster rate than i can do when driving this fast once in a while, it's just globally accepted, i quess.
But this really isn't the argument i wanted to start.

Are you seriously trying to argue the point that racing around on the highway, chasing another car at 115+mph is just as dangerous to other people on the road as driving around with a “non-oem” tune or an aftermarket “non-epa approved” air filter?? Seriously?
Serious question…..How old are you?
And the reason you don't see a lot of Mini guys here on the forums talking about racing other cars on public streets is ... :1) most people on here are grown ups who don't do that kind of stuff. and 2
because over here in the US, there are stock Toyota Camrys making 270hp, Camaro's and Corvette's making 500+ hp, and a few single/twin turbo LS1 cars in the 1000++hp range.....so a 250hp mini isn't anything to brag about. This thread went down the drain quick....

Well I'll give you some hope back by way of saying I advocate keeping a cat of some sort.
The flow rate of most high flow cats is so close to that of running a straight pipe that it's not worth the legal headache not to. You can purchase a high flow cat for the price of an illegal exhaust fine from most states not to mention you could fail inspection without one.

Thanks X757XVeritas, and now back on topic.
I'm not claiming to be a complete angel on the road, but age and experience has made me very careful.
Seriously people, take it to the track if you want to drive fast. Last year I took my 17yr. old to Laguna Seca for his birthday and we both had a great time. He still laughs about getting a point-by from a 911. I remember the fun that I had passing and getting re-passed by the guys in the Lotus Elise and the spec Miata. At the track there's far fewer cars to worry about, and you know that everyone is paying attention instead of looking at their cellphone. Plus no worries about tickets.

I've driven in the Netherlands a good bit. I can't tell you what would happen if you got pulled over at 190 kph or whatever, but I can certainly tell you that it would be way over any posted speed limit I've seen on a Dutch highway.
The autobahn, on the other hand...
