if you get the whole navigation system, you might be able to. theres also a piece under the passenger seat that's preety much the whole computer. the maps are loaded onto a DVD and then broadcast from there to the LCD screen. and then you would need the antenna fixturing to get the GPS signal. if your just looking for a screen, ive seen some people put in a nexus 7 and have it looking decent

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here, bear with me. I've recently driven a handful of R53's pretty recently...standard features, navi, chrono, you name it.
Here's my honest opinion on the navigation-equipped R53's after my recent MINI buying stint:
You gain a little resolution on the fuel gauge, especially around empty, this is true. But there really isn't much benefit, unless you spend a lot of time near empty. Instead of having 4 vertical sections, with the bottom 1/8th being a "almost empty" section, you get 10 horizontally-arranged LED dots.
Every other signal that is read by the navigation screen is already there in every MINI, hidden inside the onboard computer.
If you haven't ever reset your ECU, Setting #21 is how you would go about doing that.
Press and hold the trip reset button (only button on the speedo). While holding, turn the key to the "ON" position (don't start the engine yet!)
Let go of the trip reset button.
Repeatedly tap the button until the speedo window scrolls to option 19.
Wait a second, until "LI-OFF" appears on the screen, then press the reset button again.
Press the button to scroll to the menu option you want, then wait a second and it should display the value you want. Bear in mind, it's in metric units (as it should be )
As far as outside air temp, your default tachometer should show that in its little window.
Unless you have that little toggle button on your left turn indicator stalk, then you should just be able to cycle through a few details (i.e. distance to empty, outside air temp, fuel economy).
Hope this helps! A tablet in your dash is a lot better (and probably cheaper) than the mediocre "so-early-2000's" navigation screen.

What is your goal? You say you want to replace the speedometer with original navigation, then you say "no navigation". Do you just want to use that space for a carputer?

It's not easy or cheap to retrofit the factory NAV, mainly because the screen/main cluster is tied to the car by the VIN number and it also stores other info in it that can't be changed so you might have to use a new/unused cluster. Also, not sure if you can display video on the factory screen without having the NAV computer under the seat.
Something like this would probably be way easier, more readable, and cheaper than trying to retrofit a factory NAV unit and then integrate an android stick with an audio/video interface to display the gauges on the NAV screen.
If you want more info on the NAV screen gauges, check out the description section of this video on the actual YouTube site.
