Speedometer display not working

2002 r50. The odometer display stopped working today and I took it apart without being able to figure out the problem. Do I absolutely have to get a new assembly? And if I drive without the display, will any data be lost? Really need some input, this is very frustrating.

Speedometer

Hello Khai!

I understand your frustration. In checking with our resident tech expert, he said:

If only the odometer stopped displaying but the other functions on the speedo are working, I would 'guess' to say it is just a problem with the odometer display.

If it is a defective odometer display, I suspect the mileage will continue to be recorded in the computer even with the dead display.

The only way to be sure is probably to have a MINI dealer service facility perform a diagnostic test.

Hope this helps!

I am making an appointment next week to do my power steering recall, as well as diagnose this issue. I suspect the display also, I took it apart and looked at it, the display seemed to be just a snap in, with the clips being the contacts, if I was looking at the right part. I didnt take the face off because I was scared to damage the needles, but it looked like the display could be removed. I am just scared to get the bill or news that they won't fix it. This is my only vehicle.

Know what you mean! If the whole unit needs replacing you may check some salvage yard to see if there are savings worth doing on your own over what the dealership will charge. Might also check with some local shops that also work on MINIs. Check our list of shops too, just in case:

Let us know what happens. I'm sure others will have the same problem and can benefit from what you find out.

I doubt anyone has ever removed the display itself, might wanna get a used one and try it out. I bought mine on eBay when my speedo took a shitt, think I paid $40. If you need a whole new unit you better lube up. It's about $700 and a trip to the dealer for coding.

What are the advantages of buying it new? How did you get yours to read the right mileage? And how much do they charge to code it?

new it will have the proper mileage, mine doesn't. It's probably an hours labor to code it.

Man 700 is steep... well since I need the pump done I'll try to see if they think the issue is with the screen itself, and maybe try to swap it out.

Changing it with a mismatched Vin didn't cause any codes/lights to come on?

I was told by numerous sources that it would but I didn't have any issue.
