Well low speed is out due to resistor. Sorry forgot to mention that.

 

Which is why I'm thinking they got the high-speed circuit to work, and not the low-speed.

 

Correct. He showed me the wiring diagram, and had the each area marked that wasn't working which was low speed resistor and the wire to power high speed from ecu to the fan.

For those reading this thread with the resistor problem: If this isn't the Dorman brand resistor kit, it sure looks like it. For an otherwise nicely-engineered solution, nobody should be selling the Dorman resistor kit until they change their assembly process.

Nothing against ECS (or others selling this), but the resistor replacement in the pic has a major flaw. You can see in the pic where the wires "connect" to the metal plates. The problem is that the wires are not soldered on, they're just heat-stuck (like with some kind of spot welder) on and coated with whatever that goo is in the pic; and so the wires come off of metal plates with very little movement, so they'll likely just fall off while you're installing it - or worse, after you've installed it and have put the car back together. (Ask me how I know...)

What you'll have to do is pull the wires off (easily done), put ring terminals on them, drill holes in the metal plate and then screw them down manually with small nuts and bolts. It's a PITA, but it works. It's a shame that such a cheap and easy replacement should have such low quality in the execution of assembly.

Ok, yep, then it has it. Motor can rust and lock up on them also, mine did that near 200K. So getting two things done at once.

 

I'd replace the WHOLE fan. The unit is cheap enough (got mine for $69 shipped) and just a couple hours of (free, if you do it yourself) work. When I took my old one out, the motor made a clicking noise and the blades weren't exactly smooth spinning.

 

He already bought a new fan assembly but didn't feel like installing it for some unknown reason. I did what you did, purchased a new fan for less than a $100, fixed a blown fuse, and was done with it. It's a very common problem with all r53 Minis , and its a cheap, easy fix.

 

I got mine back from the shop today. It was actually more than the fans and a fuse. It was a wiring problem as well. But thats all been taken care of. Now I just need to replace the radiator fan so I'll have low speed again.

 

I've been dealing with this same issue, would make sense that it's literally a wire issue but I'm guessing all under the hood. I dislike wiring diagrams but dislike paying shops even more.
suppose someone could track down the bad wire/wires and resolve the issue? I'm about ready to hard wire my fans to a switch... But would rather solve this properly.

 

All the years in MINI's never came across any "wiring issues" involiving both these fans..either together or separate..( Factoid: on a face lift R50/R52/R53 MINI's with PDC rear sensor option, the system will stop "beeping" inside the cabin when backing up close to objects if the PS fan assy. has sized blowing the fuse....at that production date both the PDC and PS Fan Assy shared fuses )

Check your fuses. ( I believe there may be one in engine bay for cooling fan ) and the board behind the little door by drivers side left kick panel...Its the fuse with symbol of a steering wheel ( for PS pump cooling fan )
Replace engine cooling fan and / or ps fan assembly. (There are two types of engine cooling fan assemblies available depending on your build date )
Repeat as necessary.
It's a common issue with these little buggers.

 

I have checked all the fuses in the kick panel and under the hood, even tested each relay one by one and they all check out. I've done literally everything like the original post creator had done.. minus taking it to a shop. With my luck it'll be a wiring issue.

 

Before you start replacing parts, I would get a good diagnostic scanner that can test individual components. If you're going to work on these car, you will need to get proper tools. I use the Schwaben Scan Tool, you can do some research to get what is best for you. But guessing and just replacing parts is not going to get the job done. Good Luck.

 

i am having same issue on my 05 MCS, Both fans not working. checked all fuses and they are all okay then I checked both Sterering fan and radiator fan sockets and there is no power is coming from the line itself.i guess now i have to find a good mini mechanic shop to check the wires.
