Watching Gauges

I have been trying to pay attn to all the gauges.

The speedo is about 5 mph fast. This is common from what I'm seeing. The Water temp needle (Chrono pack) goes straight up (about 210) and this also seems common on Chrono cars. Before I bought it, I had that looked into during the PPI and they found that the Stage 1 fan was bad (is this a resistor?). They replaced the fan. The fan was going for quite a bit today in traffic - though certainly not as loud as before the PPI. Before the PPI, it sounded like a 'soft' fire truck - wind up, wind down.

The boost gauge: When I get to about -5, there is a 'soft' whine. About 0, you can feel the car 'jerk' forward. +10 and it pulls you forward. Common?

The oil pressure has me a bit puzzled. In the mornings, when I start it up, the needle goes about 75% across. After the car has been warmed up, the needle is at about 10% at idle. Driving, it's about 50%. Is this common? Oil temp is about 50%.

I have the chrono pack gauges in my 06 MCS. Oil temp varies a little depending on how hard I'm driving. It's usually sitting just under the half way mark between 100 degrees and 320 degrees. During hard, spirited driving, it goes up to the half way mark and occasionally a just over that point but it has never hit the 75% mark during driving. Engine (water) temp sits steady (needle pointed straight up) at the 12 o'clock position, between 140 and 250.

I don't understand what you're asking regarding the boost gauge.

Oil temp for me stays around 50%. That's pretty consistent. Engine temp is the same for me (12:00 position). Fan was coming on quite a bit today.

Boost .. at -5, you can start to hear the supercharger. 0, you feel the car kind of .. wanting to jump forward. +5 / 10, it's pulling and you hear it real good. Is this what you guys are seeing?

Oil pressure - anything on that one? I'm puzzled.

Oil pressure....
You start the car....the oil is thick...like pancake syrup...
As the car warms up...it gets thinner....then once warm, the psi will vary based on RPM....since the oil pump is just a collection of gears pushing oil...the volume is moves is related to both engine rpms, and how FAST the oil squirts out of the squirters aimed at the pistons and oil galleries in the block...thin flows faster... so lower psi.
Boost....you feel the bpv close, then go to + as the car makes more power....

MiniTigger,
I think your numbers are typical, as I have two S models and they seem to read the same. The lower oil pressure when warm and at idle are typical.
Cars with over 100K miles will have lower oil pressure at idle, due to wear in the oiling system. Not a problem!

And one bit of info to point out on the chrono system....
The oil temp is a "generated" or estimated number...but pretty accurate since folks have checked it...
The reason why is it doesn't have a sensor (mini did have an after sales guage kit with an oil plug sending unit)..so the system calculates that since the OEM system uses an oil/coolant heat exchanger, it can estimate the oil temp...pretty darn good too. Some might be disappointed ...but fact is it seems to work, so you know when it is safe to push harder after the car is warned up.
On the real guages, you will see season, and even daily differances.....
And that's why most car makers have ditched real useful guages....folks freak out...and ask questions...bringing cars to dealers saying it's broken or wondering stuff is failing...
You will the the oil psi will change when the oil is changed, the pressure will be a bit different, just like with seasonal changes in temps....
Have fun...after a bit, you can start to understand what the numbers are telling you...the reality is the numbers are the motor talking to you....telling you info on health or even if it a bit warm...

I agree - that's why I'm taking note of what's happening for a bit before asking.

the pressure you are seeing is typical

I have "real" g's on my 79 and Focus ST and oil pres' performs this way for the exact reasons Zippy says. Start the car oil is thick so pressure is UP. Car reaches normal temps and at idle pressure is "low" (but within safe range) and when RPMs come up so does the oil p .... completely normal . . . my ST has both a water temp and an oil temp G' so you can watch closer yet . . .

What you want to learn is where your "normals" are so you detect changes and seek the WHY . . .

Totally agree Capt. I'm monitoring so I know what 'normal' looks like.
