When my daughter turned sixteen, I burned a CD for her car. (I put it in the CD player the night before she drove off to school all by her self, so it was a surprise.) The only criterion was it had to have something about cars. (That's why Miss America Pie made it.) Another criterion was no songs about crashes! (So no "Deadman's Curve" or "Leader of the Pack.") The disc has come to be known as "Car Toons" in our household, and we burned it for our nieces and nephews and our daughter's friends when they've all gotten their licenses.

Here are the tracks, in order:

Steppenwolf - Born To Be Wild
Beach Boys - Little GTO
The Playmates - Beep Beep (The Little Nash Rambler)
Beatles - Drive My Car
Rolling Stones - Route 66
Beach Boys - Fun, Fun, Fun
Don McLean - Miss American Pie
Commander Cody - Hot Rod Lincoln
Beach Boys - 409
Bruce Springsteen - Cadillac Ranch
Janis Joplin - Mercedes Benz
Beach Boys - The Little Old Lady from Pasadena
Wilson Pickett - Mustang Sally
Beach Boys - I Get Around
Bruce Springsteen - Pink Cadillac
Chuck Berry - Maybellene
John Mayer - Why, Georgia?
Jan & Dean - Hey, Little Cobra
Chuck Berry - No Particular Place To Go
Shania Twain - In My Car (I’ll Be The Driver)
Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
Beach Boys - Little Deuce Coupe
Prince - Little Red Corvette
ZZ Top - Lowrider
Willie Nelson - On the Road Again

The 80s are under-represented. I wish I had enough room for "Cars" by Gary Numan and "Drivin'" by Pearl Harbor & The Explosions. And I did have enough room for the theme song from "Speed Racer" but just forgot to put it on.

I burnt the same CD for Tillie - the first CD she played! - but I had enough room to squeeze in "My Money's on the Little Guy" (from the "Small is Deceptive" ad) as the first track.

Her favorite on the whole CD? "Baby You Can Drive My Car."

Mine? Gotta be "Born to be Wild"!

If you like funk and R&B, and I mean pure FUNK, then there is nothing better than Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.

Some bands/Artists that fall into the category;

Coldplay
Stereo Lab
Elvis Costello
The Shins (new for me- New Slang specifically.)
Johnny Cash
Soundtrack to Ocean's Eleven
Sinatra

All have played faithful co-pilot. The list could be far more extensive as I'm sure it could for most of you.

My wife's a belly dancer, and I play doumbek and a little oud. I really like the "ethno techno" stuff coming out of France and Japan, things that go under names like "ethnic lounge" and "asian massive" and "arabesk." Labels like Six Degrees and Putumayo and Dakini. (Especially Dakini - ever heard of Makyo?)

I've found some good sources of this kind of music on Internet radio. Does any of this stuff end up on Sirius or XM or Delphi? If I could find enough of it, that might be enough to convince me to install satellite radio in my car!
