R50/53 Motor loping at idle.

Motor loping at idle.
This is something I have been noticing lately. First, 43,000 miles with 15% pulley and colder plugs (new) are the only mods. Everything else stock. No codes have been registered. A few tanks of fuel injector cleaner have been run through. After the car is warm, at idle, I sometimes can feel a lope, like a big cam V-8. Tach is steady. Give a little gas, it goes away. There are no issues at speed or acceleration. Anyone have this similar experience or ideas?

Mine does it too. When I researched it at the time, it seemed that this is a Mini peculiarity and nobody knows what makes it happen. Like you said, a quick blip of the throttle and it goes away. Temporary fuel starvation? I don't know - it never throws any codes either. I'm not worried about it in my case.

The fuel filter is a quick change, possible fuel flow issues through the older filters .

The ring can be removed with constantly tapping it out. Flat head screw driver works pretty good.
Here is your DIY thread for the fuel filter for Gen 1 MINIs.

This is next on my maintenance list anyway for my R52

Mine does it a few times a week.....but then might go for a month without doing it. I've got an ARF gauge on my car. I can tell when it's going to start to do it with the AFR reading start going from a normal 14.7-15.0....and starts drifting up to 16, then 17, then 18, and then the motor will start chugging/loping, and then the AFR's get up to around 19 and it sounds like the motor is going to die.......and then after a few seconds the AFR's start coming back down to normal, and the idle smooths out....and it's all back to normal again.
I've never gotten a check engine light, and it's never actually died. Even after a different tune, it still does the same thing. Not sure if it's just a bug in the OEM fuel/timing maps or what.....but it's annoying.
Another thing that fixes it is that as soon as it start to act like it's going to start loping, I just rev it up a little bit....and the problem is gone.
I put in a new fuel filter.....didn't help. I checked my fuel pressure....right where it's supposed to be. I put in new injectors and got a new tune, problem is still there. New plugs, new wires....problem is still there. Not sure if I've ever heard of anyone actually finding the root cause of this. Like I said...sometimes it will do it several times a week....sometimes it won't do it for months. Very strange.
