2004 Mini will not start?

Hello all, would appreciate your help with my mini's issue. I got a new alternator, new belt, new battery and a new starter. It will not start, luckely it happened in my driveway. I was able to hit the old starter with a hammer and got it started long enough to get it into my garage on ramps. Replaced the starter on Saturday thinking that was the issue and it still will not start. I turn the key everything lights up like normal and turn the key all the way thru and nothing no clicking. I have checked all the fuses and they are all good from what I can see, I am not a mechanic, but I was able to replace the alternator and starter myself with help from YouTube. I would appreciate any input you have to sove this issue.

Thank you.

Clutch switch? Maybe bypass it and see.

Ignition switch (the electrical part can be replaced separately from the key part) can also do this. I would do some checking with a multimeter to see where there is voltage and where not. I haven't looked on MINIs but similar age BMW have a green starter relay also (in addition to the solenoid on the starter).

Finally, a missing/ damaged engine ground (by the right side motor mount) can cause electrical problems.

I agree. Sounds like ignition switch problems

You might get away with cleaning the ignition switch, thread HERE. If not, you'll have to replace it as something internal in it has probably failed. Switch HERE if needed.

My 2004 no start issue was traced

to a faulty radio which would turn on while car was parked for the night or anytime actually. shut radio leave car it comes on and drained the battery dead. shut off comes on wtf...

Solution for me now was to take out the fuse w no radio
It worked hasn't been dead since

I was just looking at crutchfield for a new radio anyone have a recommend for me they have to many choices?

Im also looking for a new engine mount r50 midland type and front shocks should I do all 4? Any 2nd hands out there?

Thanks

I have an Alpine head unit. I like it. Have had it for about 7 years without issues.

We have engine mounts HERE. You'll want to check the production date on your door to confirm what mount works in your R50. You can also PM me your vin and I can look this up for you if you want.

For the front struts, replace in pairs. Unless you want to change out all 4 and upgrade to the Bilstein Touring Class, which is an upgrade from your Genuine ones, but still retain a smooth ride. We have Genuine and the Bilstein front struts HERE.

If you need help with any of the installs of these parts we have articles that can help you on our site under "tech info" tab at top. If you have any questions about these parts just shoot me a PM and I'll gladly help you out.

Thank you.
Did you ever figure out the issue? If not...

Are the symptoms now the same as they were before you replaced the starter?

If not, did you forget to hook something up or nock something loose while changing the starter?

I would 2nd what David.R53 said earlier, you need a meter to check for voltage at different locations. Could be a number of things and knowing where you have voltage and where you don't will tell you where to start.

Does the car chime when you put the key in the ignition?

Have you tried more than one key?

I only ask the last 2 because I just had an issue with the EWS telling the DME the keys were OK...

A quick check to see if you have a bad relay would be to swap the starter relay with the A/C or the fan relay.

Let us know if you still need help!

2004 Mini will not start?

This could be a resistance at the battery terminals. Lights and accessories work but when starting, lights dim and you get the click of the starter solenoid but the high current across a terminal resistance will drop the voltage, no start.
Clean the battery terminals and the earth point.

04 mini no start

Thank you, ordering ignition switch today.

I tried aswapping the starter out a 2nd time with a new one just in case the 1st one I got had an issue from AutoZone. The 1st new alternator I got from them was bad and had to swap it out.

Long shot...It happened to me. If it starts intermittently, check the fuel pump relay. Remove the green cover and inspect for damage.
