R50/53 How Long Do You Intend to Keep Your MINI?
The last car I was this passionate about was an 88 CRX. She was a sleeper, no wild wings or huge stickers. But under the hood was a pretty stable/powerful engine with some mods. Like a dummy, I sold her and I've been looking for a replacement every since. No car has filled that void, but I'm positive my "S" will. I'll keep mine until it doesn't run anymore. And the way I take care of my cars, she'll run for every.
Once your mini has seen it's last day, do you think you will put it in the backyard under a tarp and eventually restore it? reason i say is because my uncle has an old porsche doing the exact same thing...sitting in his backyard under a tarp. i bet the tires are even rotted out.
Don't get me wrong, I love my MCS very much...
Because of nagging small issues with the car and the total lack of good service from my local MINI dealership I will probably sell my MINI at the end of next summer.
This isn't totally odd for me though... I rarely keep any car I buy more than a year or 2 as I just lose interest in things quickly.
Eagerly waiting for my Subaru WRX STi I put a deposit down on and also currently looking at a winter driving car.

Honestly....in a couple years I plan on buying an M3.....a silver one to match my MINI and then I can have both.
I have gotten so used to the MINI that other cars seem way too big now......

a great question.....
i've never owned a car for more than 2 years.....
and as much as i do like this mcs....i know i'll trade her in for something ...new....
it's just what i do
i promise you...that ...if they make a mcs w/ a legit. 200+hp today....
i'll trade my mcs in....tomorrow
actually what i would really like is a $40K mcs...
yes i'll say it again...a $40K mcs.
no plastic, no cheap materials, no inferior quality...parts.....
imagine a real brushed aluminum patina interior....
imagina a sun roof w/o plastic crap....
i would love to see what a $40K mcs would look and drive like....
that would be a car....

It depends on the availability of a higher horsepower version and the cost of the JCW kit, I may keep this one as a hand me down for my 13 year old daughter, when she heads off to college in 4 years.

I guess my goal would be to keep it forever. Since it is the 2002 model, new car line etc. etc. I would like to think I will keep her until my loan is paid. The only way that would not happen could be caused by two circumstances.
1. Mini totaled in accident, can not replace her due to wait list/availability etc.
2. Mini turns out to be a lemon, (oh so very doubtful) time to get a new model.
Motor On!!
I also intend to keep my Mini forever. In order to buy it I am selling my Land Rover Defender 90 that I always intended to keep forever and getting rid of my 2001 VW GTI that I intended to keep for five years.

You'll need all that HP just to carry all the added weight.
I'd like to be able to keep this car for as long as it lasts (10+ years), but I'm a fairly frugal guy, bordering on cheap, and I don't know how long I'll be able to stomach BMW service and parts once the 36k is past. Given the problems that everyone is having with the MINI computer already, I'm not at all convinced of its long-term dependability, and I'm pretty sure that I don't want to be driving an unwarranteed MINI when that craps out. If an oil change is $90-100 and a brake job can be $600-800, I can't even imagine what it will cost to service or replace a faulty computer.
I have faith in the MINI's engine, drivetrain, etc., but I can still see this car turning into a severe money dump for non-mechanical reasons. I didn't have to scrape to buy it, but I simply couldn't justify keeping it if that starts to happen. I love this car, but I did buy it for economical reasons as well as the fun factor.
That said, the thought of driving anything else is fairly depressing...

The MINI is only the third car I have owned (will own) to date. My first car was an 11 year old VW rabbit that I got for $300 and my guitar. I loved it but it was pretty well used up after a couple of years - I bought a GEO prism in 1995 and am driving it today. A great car, that GEO (Toyota). ... but not much personality. I have NEVER been this excited about a car in my life - the MINI has brought out a part of me that must have been hiding for a long, long time. If the car holds it's value, like it is said to, I can see myself trading up in the future. If the BMW service is so expensive like I hear it is - perhaps trading up not long after the warentee is not a bad idea.

No, I just can't stand the service here in Virginia Beach, and Richmond is a long drive. Besides, ever since I had a 1981 280ZX turbo that would plaster your head to the seat on liftoff, I have never quite been satified.

I just don't know.
I've put a lot of thought into this - even before the thread started. I bought Molly with every intention of keeping her FOREVER!
Now I just don't know. What if in 3 years they have added or changed something that I really, really like? I could get a new one.
Also, I have a Pure Silver w/ Black Cooper, but the more time that goes by the more I want a Dark Silver w/ White S!
After 8k miles, I STILL get pure joy out of each and every drive. I absolutely love this car. And there is something to be said for having an '02 MY.

Oh my god, I always wanted a CRX growing up. When it came time to get a driver's license and a car, my parents of course did not approve of it

You always have to dream and the M3 is my current dream car. Sure you've got Ferrari's or Porsche's, but they've got disadvantages as well as the obvious advantages. The M3 is practical, subtle, beautiful, and it kicks *** (or should I say ****?)

I'm just gonna keep mine period. Chances are these early models could be collectibles in the future, anyways. I wanna upgrade it a bit so I can do some racing with it, but nothing that will deteriorate the everyday driveability of the car. AKA, just putting on a new intake, exhaust, stress bar across the engine, bigger brakes, 17" rims and performance tires... nothing more. I'll probably buy another Jeep Wrangler in a couple years as a winter car, and I wanna import a Lotus Elise... but my MINI will always be my everyday throw-around-and-race-occasionally car.
