R50/53 Coolant expansion tank wont stop spitting
Coolant expansion tank wont stop spitting
I am hoping someone can help me fix a slight problem I have noticed as the weather has gotten colder. I had a local shop install a water pump kit complete with new expansion tank, cap, coolant etc from ECS. Since the car has been back I have noticed some coolant being spit out around the cap I at first thought the mechanic had slightly overfilled it so I wipped it off and kept checking it. Recently I took the cap off and took some of the coolant out to the max fill line and whipped it all down again. Popped the hood today and still spitting a little bit of coolant out of the cap. I have been able to confirm there are no leaks anywhere else and it is only blowing out of the cap area..help me.
You need to have all the air bled out. Might take a couple times. Since you did the cap and everything else , that section should be fine. make sure they did not over-tighten or strip the cap. I would take it back to them and have it re-bled. make sure you are to the fill line.

Info here in regards to bleeding the system. Otherwise, maybe give the mechanic a shout as I'm sure they warranty all work performed and can take care of it for you. At the shop I worked out we preferred if individuals encountered an issue to bring it back to us first so that we could correct it before someone else tinkered with things.

Yea, I dont want you to have a CEL or overheat issue if there is that much air (mdont know what the shop did ). I would carry coolant around mixed and watch it closely. It might burp itself down.

Why did you replace the listed components?
The only reason the cap would bleed is if it is creating a faulty seal or the pressure in the cooling system is over 18 PSI, which would lead to investigate for a possible head gasket failure.
If the initial bleeds were done properly the car will self bleed as the expansion tank is the highest point of the cooling system. Once the majority of the air is out of the system you should really only have to top coolant off once at the most.

I think the reason the fluid was spitting is because the tank was overfilled I syphoned out the excess fluid and have been checking it daily and havent seen any new blow off.
In the past I overheated on the top of Mt Hood and had to drive the car off the mountain as it was overheating so I thought I may have blow the head gasket. But that was months ago and no sign since summer of any related issues. What are your thoughts?
