Cost of mods

Hey guys. I wanted to do some mods to my 03 R53. I want to do a 15% pulley, new exhaust, and cool air intake. Do you guys have any recommendations and a rough estimate of how much it will cost

You can use Google and find your answer pretty quickly. I'd recommend Way's pulley kit. That's $180. An exhaust can run you quite a lot depending on how much of the exhaust you want to replace and what brand you go with. CAI's usually run $150-$250. The DDMWorks and M7 intakes are probably your best options at $250, but the cheaper choices will usually be fine.

There are a lot of online OEM and performance parts vendors on the Internet. I'm sure a few of them will comment here with their suggestions

Madness Motorworks sells a pretty good one HERE. M7 has a pulley and kit HERE as well. Remus makes a very high quality exhaust for your R53 HERE. We do have a 10% discount on them right now. Yes, they're a bit more on the pricey side. Remus exhausts are extremely high quality and sound great. They also have a very good manufacture warranty. For intakes we have the M7 Speed "Exact Fit" Cold Air Intake System here, Madness Motorworks Cold Air Intake HERE, and aFe Power Intake Systems HERE. Let me know if you have any questions and happy modding!

Do you live in California? If so you need to be concerned about aftermarket performance mods being CARB certified. Rarely to do read about someone failing the visual inspection for having a reduction pulley, but most aftermarket CAI's stick out like a sore thumb. If you buy one that isn't CARB approved hang on to your stock intake so you can put it back on for smog tests.

Yeah I do live in California... so should I not do a pulley and CAI? Whats something I can legally do in California to make my R53 more fun to drive.

Cal prices are normally higher than everywhere else so it's hard to compare.

As for mods yes go with our pulley kit

Then the DDM intake will be the best and fit right.

You'd have to look for products that are carb legal in California, which isn't a lot. I know Dinan products (BMW) are typically all carb legal. Cat back exhausts are legal here, but also be careful about how loud it is or Police will ticket you. As long as you do not modify any emission control devices you're alright. The CAI is easy to just swap your stock box back on when it comes time to do emissions, but if you get pulled over and an officer asks you to pop the hood and sees the intake, you can get a ref ticket. For the pulley, might want to get one that is a little more subtle in color, but yes it will most likely have issues with visual inspection with a pulley depending on the smog place you bring it. There are plenty of people that do it here though and don't have issues. Let me know if you have any questions.

Dinan stopped producing their intake in 2010.

JCW is an option, albeit expensive ...

Aside from Madness, who makes a stealth pulley?

Yes, that's why I said BMW as I'm not sure they make anything for the MINI. Just using them as an example. Most of the pulleys I have seen are either colored, but I believe Alta makes a black one like Madness, but they have a lot of writing on it.

There's also the Kavs pulley, but I don't know if anyone in the US sells it ...

^ Been in touch with the owner (Ambroz); really nice guy. I believe he ships from Slovenia. I'm currently the process of purchasing an 5% blower pulley for my twincharge setup.

Check him out at http://www.kavs.eu/
