Chances are I'm replacing my fuel pump and filter soon. I don't like the idea of using a hammer and chisel to remove and instal the retaining ring but the BMW tool looks to be around $80 and I'll probably never use it again.
Any one try making a tool? I would think if I could get the right size pipe and notch it?
Honestly using a hammer and regular screwdriver, it came right off in about two whacks. The same to put it on. No damage at all to anything. Save yourself the $80 and put for something actually useful.

I agree. Really no need for that tool. Buy a belt tool if you don't have it already. That you will need someday.
Use a brass drift (like a chisel) just to be safe. Brass won't spark when you strike it, or when it strikes other things like steel retainer rings.

+1. Once the line is disconnected, use the hammer and screwdriver to carefully tap the metal locking ring counterclockwise until you can unscrew it by hand and lift it up and off the filter housing. We have a DIY that goes over all of these steps that may be of use to you for this project.
