Fuel Filter??

My sons 05 Mini S has stalled out at idle a couple times in the past couple weeks. 115k miles and I'm pretty sure its the OEM filter. I'm thinking either filter or pump. Taking the cheapest route first obviously. Is there a change cycle for the fuel filter on these vehicles??

I am not aware of a schedule for the fuel filter but I changed my daughter's R50 filter when she purchased it at 107,000 miles. It was quite dirty so my thought is to change it at 75k. No reason to make the fuel pump work harder.

The fuel filters on the MINI's are huge! Even after 100,000+ miles, they will still flow plenty of fuel even if they are dirty.

If your sons car is stalling at idle, but not having any issues and driving speeds or higher RPM's.....I'd say you have something else going on besides a fuel related issue. Does it want to stall or die on you when the gas pedal is mashed to the floor?

Have you checked/replaced the plugs and wires? Air filter? Do you have a check engine light?

All that being said.....I replaced my fuel filter at around 100,000 also....just because It was dirty, but a new filter didn't make it run any differently.

We recommend replacing the fuel filter every 100k miles.

It doesn't stall when under throttle. Only when at idle. Its only done it a few times and the plugs are only 6 months old.

I disagree with you. see my thread here:

stalling and hard starting are the symptoms.

At 115k miles, it's not a bad idea to replace the fuel filter. Here is a great DIY tech article that can help you with the replacement.

Yeah even with the filter being as large as it is, most manufacturers recommend a change every 75k (at least those who aren't dumb enough to make one non-servicable). I'd say change it even if it isn't the problem. With that being said, if you're still running factory plugs and wires, you should just change those too. Even if everything is still firing, you'll notice a big difference with clean ignition. Fouling es no bueno.

That would take about 5min to check with a fuel pressure gauge. If you have good fuel pressure when you turn the key on, and when the motor is idling....it's not the fuel filter.

Nope. I did that. Started the car and got the correct amount. I had good fuel pressure when starting and idling. But you can't drive with a fuel pressure tester attached and the intercooler off. Please don't confuse fuel pressure with fuel flow. getting 52 psi at 2-3% injector cycle is NOT the same thing as getting 52 psi with 20-30% injector cycle.
I replaced the fuel filter, and it fixed all my starting problems.
Maybe some, not all, of the people having these problems could have them fixed with a $60 fuel filter if it wasn't for others saying it couldn't possibly be the fuel filter causing them. It's 60 bux, and if you have never changed the filter, what could it hurt?
In my case it WAS the fuel filter causing my problem.

+1 on checking that fuel filter .

Here is the fuel filter for the R50 R52 R53 MINI Gen 1.

Fuel Filter Kit. Part number 16146757196

The ring can be removed with constantly tapping it out. Flat head screw driver works pretty good.

Here is your DIY thread for the fuel filter for Gen 1 MINIs.

Click here for a great how to thread.

The premise of tapping at that steel ring with a steel screwdriver makes me uneasy, especially with a tankful of petrol just sitting there just below... Isn't there a chance of a spark with steel on steel?

Methinks a safer solution would be a rubber mallet and hardwood dowel or brass punch...

Just sayin...

That's what was done in the DIY linked , You are outside the system. Not inside the tank or anything. If you have a line leak on the outside on top of that, then a small wood block could work, might be a little more hard to get the ring to spin and the wood might be soft and not pin point.
