R50/53 Toggles keep breaking
Toggles keep breaking
I've had my '05 MCS Cabrio a little less than a year, and so far 2 of the toggles (driver window and door lock) have snapped off in normal use. The switches still work, the levers are just broken off. Is this normal? If it's just going to keep happening I won't replace them, but if not I'll buy a new bank of toggles. Could invest the money into getting rid of the auto-locking instead, then I wouldn't need the lock toggle anyway.
Yikes. I lived in Tempe for 2 years and I definitely didn't miss the 110-120 weather. And it's still getting hotter there. I remember August was the hottest time of the year. That heat is definitely a bit harsher on vehicles. I haven't run across this complaint at all so might be alright to just replace them. Can find parts new here if you want. Hope it doesn't happen again!

Yeah, the heat definitely beats on you in the summertime. The upside is that we pretty much don't put the top up from September - May, and can at least drive top down at night.
I'll probably just replace them, but it's going to be a little ways down the priority list behind the motor mount, crank pulley/seal, and PS hoses that I've figured out all need attention. It's a good thing I enjoy driving it so much...

I agree with the heat diagnosis. Being that it's a cabrio the direct sun light may be attributing to it also. My car reaches over 140 degrees in the interior over the summer but I still have not broken any switches.
Have not heard of that much with the toggle switches. Are you taking old toggle switches out of a used unit and replacing them? Possible the sun and heat are baking them.

The only way we see these break is when people push their knee against the pillar hard and the housing for the switches breaks or comes apart. Then I've seen just a couple random ones that it just fell apart.
