Have you tried Craigslist to buy one. I saw a couple in different states over the weekend that they were asking $20 for. I remember one was in California. You might get lucky and find a cheap one near you.

The Sonax trunk organizers are pretty cool. Cheap and don't take any modification to the trunk. Just another option. If you do DIY this make sure to post up and show us how it turned out!

Certainly better to get an original than trying to construct one

A good tip, after you get one is before putting your rear seat backs down, place the package tray in same orientation at the fold joint. Keeps it nice, safe and secure.

A complaint from some owners has been how the seat belt fixtures dig into your leather or vinyl of the seat backs when folded down. This will protect from that as well.

Another little known fact,
The tray is actually contoured to fit along the rear headrests and over the rear cup holder when the seats are flat.

Kinda difficult to describe, but basically it's a "hat" that you put on the seats when they are almost flat, and then sits safe when flat covering the "leading edge" or tops of the rear seats when in the flat position.

Yea, they have a little contour, and I always through the rear grille was to let sound form the rear trunk ( exhausts ) enter the cabin, the Cooper versions does not have this, cool feature.

check out the market place on this site. There appears to be a used one for sale. Dont let the initial asking price scare you off, I think he's down to $75.00

Some automobiles have those to allow the 'flow-through' ventilation system (required) to function properly.

Yea, vents when you close the trunk, thinking that also . The "Cooper" one does not have that , so thinking its more for sound.
