R50/53 The Italian Job
The Italian Job
The Italian Job is on Showtime - Starts at 7:10 Central Time.
Charles
Master criminal Charlie Croker (Mark Wahlberg) and his gang pull off a perfect heist---but then a confederate (Edward Norton) double-crosses him and steals the loot. So Charlie hatches a plan to get back the booty. This slick 2003 retread of the 1969 caper gets a lot of mileage out of its turbocharged chase scenes and a cool sequence that has the crooks engineering a massive traffic jam in downtown L.A. But the film is all style and little substance, with a formulaic story and some lifeless performances. Rated PG-13 for strong language and violence.

IJ2 on TV already?
It was just last summer that it was released to a very enthusiastic MINI premiere group in southern California-

Don't forget to watch the original version too. It's funny.

Its special to us
Although TIJ, to the critics anyway, was just another typical summer flick, we loved it and always will for obvious reasons. And Charlize will always be our girl!!! It was a special time and a special place with a special car and those who participated in the whole thing last year have some very fond memories.

I recently saw the original and what a snooze fest. Its more comical than action and I did not think that it was even a good movie. Let me say though that I do not typically like older movies. I find them all too slow.
The new Italian job is a great movie with lots of action. Giving my home theater a mild workout. Even my 4yo son likes it cuz it has minis.

despite my general enthusiasm for both the old and new versions of this movie ,it has not escaped my jaded opinion that the new one (with the 36 minis it took to make the film) is nothing more than a 90 minute commercial.Actually quite brilliant marketing if you think about it:You spend a bunch of money making a commercial,BUT.........here's the clincher, people will actually PAY to watch it,and you make all your production costs back
One of the most effective brand awareness schemes in modern history,Kudos to Krispin,Porter,Bogusky for thinking it up.jmho.

Product placement happens in everymovie. Compinies pay to have there logo on set. To have a actor use a product costs really big bucks...mention the product name "give me my Ipod" and your talking...well you get the idea.

As for the Italian Job... I own both, and they are both funny in their own ways!

Granted, product placement is just another form of insiduous marketing making its way into every aspect of modern life, but if the marketers are to be believed, BMW scored a double coup with the remake of TIJ because they didn't have to pay the producers of the film to feature the new MINI, just supply them with numerous vehicles to modify, crash and use free of charge. It was a marketing miracle for MINI who have shunned the traditional means of advertising (television commercials). I attended a sneak preview with about fifty other MINI drivers, all of us bringing our cars down to the multiplex's parking lot. After the film's success, interest in the MINI sky-rocketed, I'd even wager that there are a few or even many posters on NAM whose interest in the vehicle was piqued by TIJ. Now that's effective advertising.
I don't think that it was a big commercial at all. Most big car movies have a lot of focus on one car. That doesn't make it a car commercial at all, no different than a movie set in a certain location is a tourist commercial. Just think of the great car movies:
Bullit - Mustang
Ronin - Modified Audi S8
Italian Job - Mini Cooper
Gone in 60 Seconds - Eleanor
And the list can keep going on and on.

I own both versions, well to be honest my girlfriend owns the new version and I own the original. I like the original the best. I think alot of the chase scenes are alot more creative in the original version. I was a little dissapointed by the fact that the only thing the new and old movies have in common is the fact that they center around Minis. Just my opinion.
