R50/53 Battery Question
You'd use the key to open the door.
To get the rear hatch open, there is a yellow handle situated under the rear seat in the middle that is a cable release for the rear hatch. Lift the seat a little and you'll see it.
Go to page 27 of the owners manual. - http://www.motoringfile.com/files/20...perCooperS.pdf
With the battery disconnected, be careful when opening and closing doors. With the battery disconnected, the windows will not retract for opening the doors. Roll the windows down slightly before disconnecting the battery to avoid this.

real early 02's don't have the under the seat hatch release .... this was an addition later on .. (not a recall, older cars still don't have it)
So in case of an early car, or as an option
use the key to open door manually, pop the bonnet and hook up jumper cables to the special jumping connection. Car should now have power to pop the boot.
been here several times!
