Main reason I would never own original Mini Cooper...

ZERO passive or active safety systems...

Well, for a car as small as the original MINI it looks like it did a pretty good job. I can't tell for sure from the pictures, but the passenger compartment looks pretty unchanged though the hood through the windshield would suck. Any idea how the accident happend? I'm curious as to why the engine is pushed upward.

Someone from our local MINI/Mini club, brought over last night a gorgeous 2000 Rover Mini (The very last ones of the Classic generation) in a nice shade of metallic blue (Similar to that of Hyper Blue), with white bonnet stripes and white roof. The car is barebones...no A/C, power nothing but it does have an awesome Blaunkpunt factory stereo and a driver's side only airbag (Enclosed on a very nice and thick 3 spoke leather wrapped steering wheel).

Yes, indeed, those classic don't have much of anything in terms of safety but if I were to ever buy a Classic I would definetly make the effort to somehow get my hands on one of those last Rover Minis.

Would I own a classic Mini as a daily driver? Maybe no. Some people in our club have no problem driving theirs on a daily basis, but I personally think the car is just too small and not very substantial for heavy urban traffic.

That Mini in the pic doesn't look so bad. The passenger compartment looks pretty much intact...am I wrong?

I believe the Rover Mini also has the break away steering column (a safty feature required nowadays). I would have no problem driving daily in town. But I only drive 13 miles each way. Traffic is slow for the most part. The down side is parts and a trans that shares the oil with the engines crankcase (older Minis). I would be very careful bringing in a new Mini. If the documents are not correct the car gets crushed. An horror to all car lovers.

I think it did pretty well for a car designed in the 1950's.

Ever see an American car from that generation? Body on frame cars do not do as well in crashes.

Poor Classic!
